These games were insanely popular when they came out. It was pretty much one of those established PlayStation icons that I believe it even made it into PlayStation's All-Stars Battle Royale game which was Sony's response to Nintendo's Smash Brothers.

I never had the chance to try these games, but I imagine the popularity they gained in the community was likely well deserved, or it wouldn't have gotten a buzz like the one it got.
