Growing up everyone loved Metroid. It was one of those franchises that could not do wrong, and people regarded those games as masterpieces.
Maybe that was enough for me to not want to get into them. Initially I imagine it was a lack of patience, feeling that it never ends, that you have to circle back the same areas, and that it was purposely making you lose your time.
But soon after IGA hit, he completely changed my mind about the genre. I got it after that. It was a light bulb realization that made me understood why these genre was so significant and praised. So in recent years I have been going back to enjoy these titles, and I still have many to cover, which is a good thing because I have become a fan as well, which is something I was definitely not back then.

I'm with you, stratogustav: I didn't enjoy the genre for a long time, but nowadays I'm looking forward to play some of its well known classics, like the GBA/DS Castlevania games, which I'll try to play this year. About the Metroids: the lack of a map, the very similar areas and basic, early-NES graphics were an acceptable start for the series, but it's hard to go back to them after the mold created by Super Metroid and used in Zero Mission and every later game in the search-action genre. While I think most of the best side-scrollers on the NES aged really well, Metroid was always one exception to me: it had great ideas, but needed a better execution. That's why I'll vote for the remake, as it shows the potential of the first game and gets more in line with the rest of the series. Also, the zero-suit section is a nice change of pace. If Armored Core Raven ever confronts Metroid II GB vs 3DS, my opinion will be similar: the remake is better. Though, in this case, the fan remake AM2R is much superior to both of them and the best way to experience Metroid II.
