I never truly got into Battlefront or it's sequel but I would pick them up for some quick fun inbetween other games. I recall liking Battlefront 2 a lot better of the two but it's been a while since I played them.
And I must say I've never heard anyone say their favorite Star Wars game is The Force Unleashed. Generally the ones I hear a lot are Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Outcast, Rogue Squadron/Leader, and the Battlefront games.

Both are good, neither are perfect, and while Battlefront 2 is the better game, I want to come out right now and say that I honestly like and respect Battlefront 1 more, mainly for its excellent production values, superior graphics, and vastly superior levels. Most of the levels in Battlefront 2 are just rehashed from the first game, and the ones that aren't are mostly linear corridor designs with only a small number of new the new maps being open ended/outdoor, all of which look far uglier than Battlefront 1's maps, and some of which are just horribly designed and extremely forgettable (like dagobah). I just don't respect Battlefront 2 as much for that reason, despite it being more customizable with awesome additional game modes (like hunt and assault) and heroes/villains. I played the pc version of Battlefront 1 for the first time today and was amazed by how great it looked and ran. I think Battlefront 2 could have been a lot better had it been in development longer.
Also on the subject of the greatest Star Wars games (in response to Balder and ArmoredCore's discussion on page one of this thread), in terms of critical reception the Jedi Knight/Dark Forces games are generally seen as the best (with Rogue Squadron and KOTOR series being possible contenders), despite their obscurity. Jedi Knight Outcast & Academy are easily the best 1st/3rd person hybrid action games I've ever played. They really are masterpieces. Battlefront 1 & 2 by comparison didn't innovate or break any ground, despite being really fun games, which is probably why their review scores were lower.

MeleeMonk KOTOR is great, but a little dated. Republic Commando on the other hand, holds up well.

Balder Never played Republic Commando but it looks very interesting. I also haven't actually played KOTOR, either. But I have played all of the Rogue Squadron games.

I prefer Rogues Squadron when it comes to Star Wars, but Battlefront has spaceship missions too, which is what I like about them. It is just my favorite thing.
