This Week: The Star Wars Holiday SpecialChosen by: billspreston So Bill didn't technically suggest this movie (meaning he didn't ask for it to be a weekly discussion), but he brought this little treasure up in a thread earlier this month and I decided to credit him with it here. If anyone finds this pick to be offensive, blame me, not Bill S. And just in case I don't log in over the next week, I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Happy Life Day (or whatever holiday you celebrate), and a Happy New Year! I appreciate all of our discussions and I wish you all the very best going into 2018! Take 'er easy, Wind Squids. Released: 1978 Starring: Chewbacca, Malla, Lumpy, and Itchy Special Appearances by: Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, R2-D2, C-3PO, and Boba Fett Director: Steve Binder, David Acomba Producer: Dwight Hemion, Gary Smith Writer: Pat Proft, Leonard Ripps, Bruce Vilanch, Rod Warren, Mitzie Welch

And you forgot Bea Arthur is in it too.
(Ya'll remember this the next time you complain about Disney "commercializing" Star Wars)

(Ya'll remember this the next time you complain about Disney "commercializing" Star Wars) Its always good to remind people that this Jar Jar lollipop was conceived and licensed and sold years before Disney got its mitts on Star Wars. Best part of the Holiday Special was knowing that before Disney reordered things, Jefferson Starship was canon.

Not a fan of the special as a whole, but I did enjoy the animated segment. Despite not being very exciting and boasting a sometimes very weird art style, it was still one of the few pieces of Star Wars animation that I have even the slightest amount of respect for (not counting video games).
I think the idea of a live action holiday-themed Star Wars special is just beyond bizarre; even if it's not based on a real life holiday that doesn't change the fact that it feels like it was made for easily amused children.

Well, it kind of was made for easily amused children. I’ll even admit that I would have totally dug this if I was a kid that didn’t know better in the late 70s.

It DOES need more Jar Jar, so you could grab everything together and throw into a dumpster fire.
Yeah, Disney's commercialization of Star Wars is very tame compared to anything cooked up by Lucas. Lucas practically invented movie merchandising.

I loved Phantom Menace as a kid, but I honestly don't think I would have liked this. Unlike Phantom Menace, the Holiday Special doesn't have any action whatsoever nor any real entertainment value. It's just boring and weird. I definitely would've liked the animated part, though. I absolutely loved animation as a kid.

And Bea Arthur’s 40 minute song was pretty action packed.

It's just one man though, that's like an aperitif of action, a teaser more teasing than a teasing teaser teasing really teasingly.

Look here dudes. Star Wars is more than just laser beams and light swords and space ships. It’s also about fun and games and antics and the Star Wars Holiday Special perfectly encapsulates that. You guys are just anti Christmas heathens.
