OK if we are doing that then 1>4>3>2, and I don't count DMC. It feels like another game. It's not bad, but not Devil May Cry. It's like the Lords Of Shadow of Devil May Cry. Lords Of Shadow is a good game, but nit a Castlevania. Bloodborne is more Castlevania than Lords Of Shadow. Yes, I also think Ninja Theory's DMC is a fine game but should have been its own thing - besides using the same names for the characters, it barely has anything to do with the series. Which is bad, as it could have started an entirely new and promising series if they hadn't tied it to Devil May Cry. Edit: My list would go as 1>3>4>2. 3 has a better gameplay than 1, but loses on atmosphere and exploration; 4 has great combat but is obviously a rushed game, with too much repetition - you fight each boss what, three times? 2, however, is just sad.

leaon79s 4 used to be my 2nd favorite for a long time but for the past few years it's been 3>1>4 for me (never played 2). Playing through the missions again when 4SE came out reminded me how much of a slog the main story mode was, which is a shame because it has the best combat. I'm also surprised that some of you guys don't hate DmC that much. I remember despising it when it came out but once I actually started playing the game I didn't think it was bad at all, it just seemed like much more of a run of the mill hack & slash than most DMC games. I don't think it's a good DMC game but as far as hack & slash/character action/whatever you call them games go I think it's not bad at all. Better than most other games in the genre that've come out since imo.

Better than most other games in the genre that've come out since imo. I don't really know how to explain it, but DMC always felt to me more like an "action game with melee combat" than a proper character action game. There's something about the movement and the controls that just isn't like DmC/Bayonetta/Ninja Gaiden etc.; it's closer to games like Darksiders, which is a 3d platformer/action. It's almost like the controls are more focused on platforming than combat. Even the fact that the original console releases only aimed for 30 fps shows that its combat is not as fast, precise and based on well-timed inputs as you would expect from a character action game. Its combat is mostly a simple button-masher - again, like Darksiders. They used that asinine "match the correct weapon with the enemy color!" mechanic to make it look more complex, but it only emphasizes how superficial the combat is. Maybe that's why I don't see it as part of the same series - DMC feels like it's in a slightly different genre; it's a 3d platformer/action. Still a good game, though; certainly prefer it over Darksiders.

It seems that people who were initially impressed by 4 tended not to be so anymore after the reversed levels with Dante. And true enough, given the bigger picture, 1 displays more inspiration and vision compared to the rather by the books 4. But personally it was always about how the ending chimed with me, and I'm a sucker for those kind of stories.

As in, if the Capcom studio proper had gone on and made one themselves, it wouldn't have deviated too much from what we got from Ninja Theory anyway. At least not with regard to the story. Save for a few details I could almost swallow the notion of the end of DmC leading straight into 3, and still have it fit into the existing continuity better than 2. What's more, that would make the character of Kat a viable candidate for being Nero's mother...!
Furi and Nier Automata were very recent, though, and both were acclaimed, so I think the genre isn't going anywhere - and with Team Ninja recovering their reputation with Nioh, I think they might try a new Ninja Gaiden soon. They said its a few years off, or 'in the shadows' for now. DMC5 is being teased constantly, so there is that. Isn't there a possibility of 5 being announced before long? As in E3 2018...

Speaking of Darksiders, i liked DS1 a lot, but i recently played DS2 and i really hated it. Its a puzzle game with action elements and a really clunky combat. Made me appreciate the genre more only because of the feedback those games have when fighting. Ds2 has none of that.

fsfsxii - I also prefer Darksiders 1 over 2, but mostly because I think 2 was too padded out - I like the entirety of the first world, it's well planned out and has a lot of exploring to do, but then they introduce a much bigger second world that is just empty and boring to traverse, and then there's a third world... It was just too much, I was tired when I reached the final levels. I also agree that the combat in the first one had much better feedback. leaon79s - Do you know which series could be Zelda for the true man? Beyond/Legend of Oasis. I'll never forgive Sega for having abandoned that one. There's also Okami, which is Zelda for the artistically inclined. I think we should just go full IGN/Gamespot here and just declare that every game should be either a "Zelda for" or a "Dark Souls of" something. Devil May Cry is either the Dark Souls of Resident Evil games or the action Zelda for RE fans.

I didn't notice this until you mentioned it, but you are absolutely right, I just never put it together before.
