Film Discussion of the Week: Highlander

Heh, for the TV show maybe...


But personal preferences aside, this first film is undeniably what made the franchise, and Christopher Lambert will always be The Highlander, while Adrian Paul is destined to be remembered as... just an OK stand in... 

The TV series had its moments and was kewl in its own way and all, but ultimately was its own thing and tread its own path separately from the theatrical films.
I enjoyed it enough, but didn't particularly care for the 'Endgame' B Movie finale...   


On a side note, I've always thought the Anime movie was the best interation of the franchise since the first film, as it managed something the sequels could not - being kewl without a Queen soundtrack.

I haven't seen anything Highlander in a long time but I remember I liked it.

After having rewatched it now tonight I'm glad to say my nostalgia glasses were not clouded, they were as clear as day, Highlander holds up as good as I recall and did not disappoint after all these years.

Found this movie at tubi.tv. I've been looking for this movie for ever, and it was finally released there. Here's my review:

"Highlander has a very original premise. Immortals who can only be killed by decapitation and can steal each others powers called the quickening. There can only be one, and the last immortal man standing will receive all the knowledge of the universe. That is really some bat-shit insane stuff. All the plot points are rather generic unfortunately. There are the typical tropes like falling in love with a woman, her kidnapped, the villain slaying the hero's master etc. These things I have seen way too many times. The actors do decent jobs, and the villain is villainy as fuck. The sword scenes I have mixed opinions about. On one hand they are really cool with all the lightning effects, and adding a car battery onto the sword to create practical more sparks is genius. On the other hand the fight choreography is slow as hell. The theme is fantastic though. Overall I think this movie is very unique and it is certainly worth a watch, but it is far from perfect in my opinion." 3.5/5

In contrary to cobretti, less than 5 doesn't mean it's bad. 2.5 is average. 3.5 is very good. As for Highlander as a franchise; there are so many sequels, and they all sound hilariously bad. The thing about the original Highlander is that they walked the fine line of being quirky, but still managing to hold a certain quality enough to the point of becoming a cult classic. The sequels look like they are trying to catch lightning in a bottle again, which almost never happens in these sorts of movies.
