'Art' is too generic IMO. It means something different to you, but it carries a stigma of pretentiousness. One thing Kubrick should never be considered to be is pretentious.

I think Bill, Cervantes , and Balder are all right in some ways. Art films are generally small and independent, which 2001 obviously isn't. 2001 definitely doesn't follow a lot of the "rules" of other art films (like a limited release). But it could be argued that Yoko Ono's movies don't get a lot of funding or screen time mostly just because no one wants to see them. Just because 2001 had a big budget and saw a general release doesn't mean it can't be described as an "Art Film" imo. I wouldn't describe it that way myself, but I could see how someone might. It's unusual pacing, the disturbing, symbolic visuals, and a focus on a message over entertainment puts 2001 in maybe a gray area that I guess we could call an "Artistic Film." It's definitely more than just a thriller, anyway.

In a way it encompasses almost every movie, but I would still hold on to the opinion that 2001 is an art film through and through.

Actually I think it is the very first WTF flim ever.... Georges Melies was making weirder stuff more than half a century earlier.

Let's not forget that Salvador Dalí made movies in the 1920s - Un Chien Andalou says hi.

Yeah, but those flims weren't shy about and were explicit in being wierd from teh outset. One could even argue the very beginings of cinema was wierdness...True WTF flims first need to lull you into believing they are about something else... and then... Ta Daaaaa!!.... Tat tat Tat tat Tat tat... Heil, this flim even defined the perfect soundtrack to match...
