Dewd... This topic together with the Shenmue re-release announcement are really pushing me to give Zero a go now. But if I start to get into it only 0,1,2 and 6 will be available on PS4... Have to go back to PS3 for teh rest of the story in 3-5... It’s totally worth going back. Yea, but problem is I don't have my PS3 on me anymore...

Even if 3-5 and the zombie one don't get the full Kiwami treatment this generation, I could easily see Sega re-releqsing them on the PS4, either standalone or as a collection.

They would at least have to re-translate them since it’s pretty inconsistent between games. 3 has Kiryu referred to by his first name exclusively and others had their names changed entirely. When Atlus took over the translations starting at 0, they started using Japanese honorifics, so we moved from “Mr. Kiryu” to “Kiryu-san”. Just dumping the games on PS4 wouldn’t work out to well, I think.

Yea, but problem is I don't have my PS3 on me anymore... Why would you give away your PS3? With all the arcade games I have there, I could never do it.

I didn't. That'd be crazy! I still haven't even platted Revengeance yet! It's just in warehouse storage together with all my old games and other legacy consoles quite some distance away after I moved house last year... The only one I brought with me was the PS4 (+ Vita) as I thought that would be enough for the time being... Was going to retrieve it earlier but there were other priorities to bring back first and I didn't feel like opening up the large box it was in to dig it up.

Probably my favorite series of games these days, easily. Been playing since the very first game on PS2 and its amazing to see how much effort they keep putting into these games. My favorite is either Yakuza 5 or Yakuza 2, 0 was an amazing title as well. Yakuza 5 is the pinnacle of the series in many aspects, mainly the story although it goes off the rails by the end, but the amount of mechanical diverstiy in that game is unparalleled by any game ever. You get unique minigames for every characters in that game, for Kiryu, you get an Initial D taxi side story that rivals the main plot at times, complete with its own mechanics and nuance. For Haruka you get an Idol simulator, and for the 5th character you get a baseball simulator. The best thing about these mechanics is that they fall in line with what the characters are doing in those games.
Since this is a classic gaming forum, if anybody wants to get into the series, they should start with the very first game on PS2. The prices have gone down since 2017 because of reprints of the first 4 games. Eveeyone recommends starting with 0,but that game expects the player to be familiar with a lot of stuff regarding the characters and the world, some characters lose their weight if 0 is your first entry into the series.

Is starting with Kiwami as recommendable as the PS2 original? The original was dubbled if not mistaken, so I'd have thought there might be some transitional hiccups to the all-subtitled-only follow ups.

It expects you to be familiar with 0, while 0 expects you to be familiar with Yakuza 1 on ps2. I guess thats just a regular flaw of prequels. The dub in the first game is actually quite good, it reminds me of the 80s chinese action films, but yakuza is better than that. I loved kiwami, but they changed some stuff about the antagonist that 0 highlighted, so there are some contradictions. Kiwami is a better game, but the story is messed with. However, Yakuza 1 is not that outdated, it has its issues, but it is a gem imo.

The PS2 version of the original has that celebrity voice cast where the others have the original Japanese voices songs it transitions wieird. I started at 0 and I don’t feel punished or expected to have had prior knowledge of the series to get into the swing of things.
