Hi!
I've been thinking about starting my retro game collection. I ran into some rough times in college I had to get rid of all my video games. As of right now I have a PS4 and a Wii (one of the older ones that still plays Gamecube), but I've been thinking about getting a Dreamcast again as that was always one of my favorites. I've recently seen they have a lot of custom games and emulators (DreamSNES...etc), are any of the custom games any good? Do the emulators work well? In the past I had read that Dreamcast lasers struggled with burned games, is that true with these titles?

Herro, there's heaps of third-party stuff out there but I don't know a lot about it. There are quite a few serious post-DC era releases like Sturmwind, Gunlord and Alice's Mom's Rescue. Most of these new titles are 2D shooters, though. I've also been told to be wary of burnt games. However, I've seen modded Dreamcasts that take the small memory cards from phones and cameras. From that card, you could also play games. Also, I should point out there are ways of turning your PSP into a SNES emulator. Look at the buttons, it's perfect for SNES titles! |

btfu149 - They shouldn't, as they are actual pressed CDs, not CD-Rs, so they should be no problem for your system. The problems I've read about burnt games are related to the bad quality of CD-R discs and the process through which data is recorded in them. To be more specific: from what I've read, systems like the Dreamcast auto-adjust their laser power, so as CD-Rs are less reflexive than normal discs, it ends up using more strenght on the laser (thus straining it). Other thing I've read is that tracking errors during the recording process (and bad discs are more prone to these) will make the drive work harder trying to re-read the problematic parts, thus shortening its lifetime. Pressed discs aren't usually prone to this, from what I've read.

By the way, Segata's actor did the voice acting for Ryo's father in the japanese version of Shenmue (a nice homage for all his work as Segata). As the new release will allow chosing the language, we can finally get that small homage.

I used demul in the past and my experience was so bad it motivated me to just get a physical Dreamcast. It's been years since then, I tried using demul again recently to emulate some Naomi board arcade games and it actually ended up working mostly fine with a few graphical hiccups. However, I've seen modded Dreamcasts that take the small memory cards from phones and cameras. From that card, you could also play games. I actually have one of these SD card adapters but I've yet to try it, since it involves installing this bootleg OS on your Dreamcast. |

I'm not familiar with them, do you have more info on those? I know they are German and they made some really cool Dreamcast games that were also ported to the Neo Geo MVS like Last Hope, Fast Striker, Gunlord, and Neo XYX, at least those are the ones I remember Lord Karnage covering. |
