I've heard that you can do it, has anyone tried this? Does it really make much of a difference? From what I've seen it costs over 100 dollars to do this which seems kind of silly considering the system is only about 50, anyone find any cheap but effective ways to do it?

If you’re hell bent on HDMI, I don’t think you’re going to get a solution cheap unless you want to roll the dice on one of those shitty composite/S-Video to HDMI converter box. The most economical thing to do to get the best video out of the Dreamcast is to get a VGA box, and even that is like 80-100 bones.

It produces the best video output of anything officially available for the system by far. It’s not something that can be debated. Weather the upgrade from S-Video is worth the premium price you’ll pay right now is up to you to decide. However, Retro-bit is supposed to be producing officially licensed reproductions of accessories for the old Sega consoles, including the VGA box, so hopefully soon you won’t have to pay that guy in Dubai a hundred big ones for a box.

Good to know! I'll hold out, I'm enjoying it just fine with the AV cables for now

I had to throw away my 12 foot HDMI cable yesterday that I was using for my projector. It always amazes me to see how HDMI cables also have a lifespam, and quite short to be honest. In the back of my mind I keep thinking they will last for years to come and that is never the case.

You bending it at an odd angle or moving it around to much? Most likely it is because of connecting and disconnecting them. I never have enough HDMI ports. My room TV only has 4, and the soundbar only 3, when I want to connect my mini desktop to the TV, I have to disconnect something, between the Blu-Ray player, the PS3, the Wii, the Switch Dock, the PS4 Pro, disconnecting the VR for the HDR passthrough, the projector, and now the Super Nintendo Classic, I'm always switching HDMI cables, sometimes friends bring their own PS4s and connect them here, it is just too much. Luckly for me it is always the cables that get damaged and not the ports. That would be a bad thing to happen. I tried splitters before, but usually their signal weakens the 4K or the HDR gets lost in the process like what happens with the VR unit. It sucks HDMIs are not as durable as component cables and coaxial ones; but HDMI cables are not the only ones that die, it has happened with cellphone cables, PS3 controller cables, ethernet cables, and even optical audio cables as well.

Don’t they make switch boxes for HDMI? I’ve always hated those things but that might be a quick and dirty solution for you.

I'm already thinking in getting one of those to use it with Elgato, I got the slim version and it will only record certain things if the DCHP off, needless to say for most content it is always on or it won't play them. So getting a switch box that can passthrough the signal while removing the DCHP is the only way to record many things using HDMI, like Netflix TV shows or PS3 HD gameplay.

Anyone try the new Pound Dreamcast HDMI converter that just came out? It's on Amazon for $30, seems like a cheaper solution than the VGA box and I don't think my TV has a VGA connection anyways.

The Hanzo VGA box has been the most popular solution so far. If they have an alternative, that is good news.
