It's supposed to be ambiguous in a subtle way, I remember it being talked about on the DVD. Basically it's either all of Quaid's experiences were real, or that the memory implant went wrong and the movie's events starting at Quaid escaping Rekall were part of the dream. The whole fading to white thing at the end can be interpreted as Quaid getting lobotomized.

scipioafricanus and winnersdontusedrugs - I also always saw it as ambiguous, it's very clear they were going for that in the final act. They don't emphasize it enough (it's not like Inception's ending or anything), but it surely is there.

As much as I loved Veerhoven's Robocop and Starship Troopers, I'm not that big a fan of Total Recall. IMO the best part is sweaty Sharon Stone.
I heard they were thinking of casting Swayze for the lead role, and I think he or Kurt Russel would have been a better choice. Don't get me wrong, Arnie is good in this, but he feels miscast and I would have liked to have seen them go full Running Man/Predator with the action. It's also lacking in Jesse 'the body' Ventura.
But on top of that, this movie feels like it's showing off their amazing practical effects too much.
