The N64 may have been before the PS1 with thumbsticks, but who in their right mind think the N64 controller is better than the dualshock? We were taking about influence. Like I said, we have see these things evolve from then on, but undoubtedly the console was a game changer, and that gives the N64 their high profile status when it comes to influence in the console market. It even influenced its competitors on the first year of release, there is simply no contest.

While I personally consider the N64 probably the worst of the "big" consoles (considering the ones made by Nintendo, Sega, Sony and Microsoft), I do admit it was highly influential for 3d games. While it didn't invent analog controls (even the Saturn had its analog controller before the N64), it made them the standard for 3d games; it also popularized the idea of having dedicated controls for the camera (the C buttons in Mario 64) and standardized the idea of the camera locking on enemies so you could strafe them in Ocarina of Time: this idea was already used in Tomb Raider and Mega Man Legends, but it was Zelda that finally nailed it down. The N64 defined, for years, how at least three genres should be played in 3d: platformers, action-adventures and console first-person shooters.

(even the Saturn had its analog controller before the N64) Nope: But I do agree with many of the other things you said. Although OoT set ground for many other things too, particularly in solidifying the harmony between plot with gameplay in a 3D environment, it was most notorious for small things concerning gameplay related mechanics and other stylistic referential resources for action / adventure focused games.

stratogustav - Ah, I mixed the release dates; the Saturn 3D Pad was released before the N64 in the US: August 23 for the Saturn 3d Pad, September 29 for the N64. In Japan, it goes June 23 for the N64 and July 5 for the Saturn. Still, the idea that it was an answer to the N64 controller, as said in Sega Retro and some other sources, is doubtful, as they were released less than two weeks apart each other - they were being developed at the same time. Of course, one could say that Sega knew about the N64 controller through announcements or demos or plain industrial espionage, but then the same could be said in reverse, that Nintendo knew about Sega's controller. In any case, the truth is that their releases were almost simultaneous. EDIT: That Sega Retro page is all over the place: they themselves admit later, and I quote, So it was not inspired by the N64 and was released before it in western markets.

Balder Brah you really need to experience the N64. I can think of many games for the system that would be must-plays for someone like you (like Star Wars Shadow of the Empire or Rouge Squadron for example, two games that every Original Trilogy fan should play). And if you really can't stand the N64 controller, just buy yourself a third party Brawler 64 controller: It fixes every problem with the N64 controller and in some ways is superior to the Xbox 360 controller (it's been said to feel very similar to Microsoft's 360 controller). I don't own one myself, but if you can't trust Metal Jesus Rocks, who CAN you trust?? Bottom line: get N or get out.

Sega Retro is no mistaken when they said the Saturn was forced to adapt, just like PlayStation was forced too. We know Nintendo is always bringing new "gimmicks" for their hardware, and this was no the exception. What happened is that Nintendo kept hammering on promoting their own Ultra 64 system with an anolog stick way back when the first Killer Instinct came out before the N64 was even out. Sega saw this and were quicker than Sony to react. That said, even though the revolutionary N64 was the one that influenced the market and changed the way we play games forever, it was the almighty Vectrex the original thumbstick maker. Also as much as Nintendo laid down the ground for all future games in a 3D environment, no one can come and tell me that the original Battlezone is not 3D because it is beyond 3D, and it projects reality more accurately than what our human senses can interpret it as.

Balder Funny enough the XE-1AP was also one of the first gamepads with shoulder buttons. It's too bad that controller never came out in the west, although it's not like there was a whole lot of use for the analog sticks in 1989.

It is one if the many things we were missing out in the West, as always. Also don't dismiss the 5200 controller, and the Vectrex controller I mentioned before, those were even older. All of those were definitely ahead of their time. But we had to wait until the N64 came out to truly see the changes in the industry. A similar scenario is the Virtual Boy. Nothing substantial really happened until PlayStation released the PSVR in 2016, more than 20 years later.

It might be the worst high profile controller ever made. But that 3rd party one looks quite nice. I feel like most 5th gen 3D games are pretty rough and dated.

Haha xD. For real though, he has Ocarina of Time, Rainbow Six, Smash Bros and some others that I cannot remember at the moment. He almost never plays it, but I have played some Rainbow Six with him. But the controller is awful, so the experience is mixed.

Yeah, Balder, you can just admit your deep passion for the N64, we won't tell the other Sega blokes about it.
