Overall meh, it's technically a minor step up from the previous game but the time reset gimmick is poorly handled and makes it endlessly annoying until you figure out how to fix it, and even then it's not properly fixed, just "managed" so it becomes less annoying, it takes far too long to fix it even when you know what to do and how to do it so it doesn't matter, it's a huge problem and the game suffers because of it. Then we have the masks that could've been cool but instead you get almost universally boring ones that do nothing of value, a very wasted opportunity, not much else to say as the rest is pretty much just lazy copy & paste from Ocarina of Time.

Excellent game, definitely not for everyone, and that can be said for the entire franchise.
This belongs to the timeline when Link the Hero Of Time dies, it all points out that way. So the game is literally about spirits in the spirit world, and that enhances certain aspects of the game we rarely see in other games.
Twilight Princess wanted to provoke the same feeling with the Okami transformation, but in didn't hit home, at least not in that regard. Majora's Mask was successful at accomplishing that feeling because it was the dimension that caused it, not the Hero.
Normally this would not be the kind of game for me either, but there is something behind Zelda's vibe that traps you in the lore and experience of those games.

Best damn game in the series. This game taught me about suffering and that it's okay to suffer because you are not alone, at such a pivotal age too. I still suffer cycles of mild - severe undiagnosed depression / self - deprecation and the memories of this game give me an acute sense of self - awareness / realized self - importance.
It makes me tear really. I can't bring myself to play Majora's Mask more than periodically but I'll always love and cherish the title.

I never really got into this one. Ocarina was so amazing, and then the failed 64 DD Zelda game came out. I was interested at first, but I hated the timing mechanic. I really didn't like the story either. I know stratogustav hates Twilight Princess, but love that one so much more.

I'm a bit ashamed to say that I didn't play the original N64 version for more than a few minutes when it originally came out. Not sure why, as I liked Ocarina of Time well enough.
I was exposed to it somewhat when Wind Waker came out. A friend was playing through all the Zelda games (not counting CD-I) before getting to Wind Waker, and he was experiencing Majora's Mask for the first time and quite enjoying it. In particular, he liked how some aspects carried over to Wind Waker. For example, with NPCs having set routines during the day/night cycle, and certain events being tied to time of day.
I recently corrected my error when the 3DS version came out, and quite enjoyed it. From what I understand, there were a lot of little quality of life improvements that weren't in the original, such as the Song of Double Time allowing you to skip to specific hours instead of 6-hour blocks.

I can see where you're coming from in regards to Majora's Mask, but I'm curious as to what makes you think that for the entire franchise? I've always been of the opinion that Zelda games are very approachable and for everyone (not to sound like that's inherently a bad thing).

I've always been of the opinion that Zelda games are very approachable and for everyone (not to sound like that's inherently a bad thing). You can tell by the sales. Games that are for everyone are Mario games, that's why they sell so well. Mario: - Mario Kar Wii 38 million copies - Super Mario Galaxy 13 million copies - New Super Mario Bros. 31 million copies Zelda: - Twilight Princess 8 million copies - Skyward Sword 4 million copies - Crossbow Training 6 million copies What happens is that Zelda games are often artistic, influential, emotional, and immersive, so the people that like that sort of thing end up loving them. This is why Zelda games are very prominent. The "very approachable" feel comes from Zelda games often having the best of the industry game design, but that along is not enough for grabbing most people. A lot of people simply have trouble relating to high fantasy in general, medieval themes, ancient religious references, and the heavy epic literature stylistic elements of Zelda games, which prevents Zelda for reaching sales in the likes of Grand Theft Auto or Call Of Duty for example.

Worst Zelda game IMO, couldn't get into this one at all after how epic OoT was.

In my opinion Majora's Mask was the last great Zelda game and overall it's my favorite game in the series as well as one of my favorite games of all time. I don't play it much anymore, but it had a profoundly positive impact on my childhood. Speaking of which, whatever happened to young Link, anyways? He was the protagonist in two console titles, appeared in Melee, and wasn't heard from again until SSB Ultimate was announced last month. There's something magical about playing as a kid in an dark-fantasy/adventure game. I wonder if we'll ever see Link as a child in another Zelda game again? (that abomination known as Toon Link doesn't count)
I'm getting a bit off topic. About the game, quite simply it's just an incredible experience, a powerhouse of artistic imagination. I've never played a game with the same kind of imagination as Majora's Mask. Between the strange/surreal environments and an actually original plot, Majora's Mask puts ever other title in the series to shame when it comes to these aspects. When Majora's Mask came out in 2000, I don't think anybody really knew where the series was going to go. A lot of people (myself included) thought that Majora's Mask marked the beginning of a trend of setting each new title in a new location. Unfortunately these days, the LoZ series is rehashed to shit and all washed up, but back then it was still seen as a promising, well respected series that had potential, and Majora's Mask proved it. The LoZ franchise is kind of in the same boat as The Elder Scrolls is now, with both being past their prime, except whereas Bethesda at least gives us new locations with each new TeS game, the Zelda series is still stuck in Hyrule and has rehashed this setting so much that it's practically a joke by now, as well as its lore.
I think the fresh setting and lore is what really makes Majora's Mask stand alone as the most original game in the series, but it excels in just about every other area as well. The combat is just as good as OoT's, the music is outstanding and very atmospheric, and the transformation masks allow for a completely new gameplay experience. I remember being so in awe when I first swam in the sea at swordfish speed as the Zora. It was just such a radical change for the series, with a noticable touch of dark fantasy. Almost every aspect about Majora's Mask's design is absolutely outstanding, even if the art direction is admittedly a bit too expressionistic for my own taste; I mean, a few of the new character designs looked like something from Wind Waker. I thought OoT's visual design was more impressive TBH, though MM's was far more imaginative, so that balances it out.
I could just go on about this game's design all day. I remember the first time I stepped into the Astral Observatory when playing as a kid and experiencing a feeling of awe and euphoria brought on by the beautiful heavenly music and the sensory overload of colors emminating from every surface of the building. It still ranks as one of my favorite gaming memories, and Majora's Mask has so many moments like this.
If I had to list things I didn't like about the game, I guess one of the things would be my usual complaints about all Zelda games which is how formulaic the flow of the story is. You get a bit of exposition, then you're on the quest to gather a number of different sacred items with minimal story along the way, going from one obligatory temple (usually elemental themed) to the next temple, then the next temple, then the next temple, and so on. As a kid I wasn't bothered by this but when I played through other adventure/RPG games that handled this so much better (namely Oblivion) I began to see the flaws with the storytelling in the Zelda games. I don't understand when all the Zelda games have this presentation with their story rather than going for something less cliched instead. I mean, the Fire Emblem games don't have this problem, and that's also a Nintendo series. I feel as though a lot more thought could be put into the layout of these games' storylines.
(mom just tried to spray me with bleach gonna have to finish this post later)

I don't know, man... I'll try to think more about it later, but while I do love the idea of Majora's Mask, its tone/atmosphere (this is the closest we ever got to a David Lynch's Zelda) and the individual stories of the various characters, I find the game itself really hard to get into, as the pressure of the time running out and making you lose a big chunk of progress every time is unbearable - I remember I was never properly exploring anything on my own pace because I didn't want to redo my actions to get to the point where I was. In a series largely about exploration, the way the time concept was handled was just not the best. Also, the save system was crap. Hell, when I tried to play the game a second time, I couldn't even pass the "tutorial" section because it obligates you to play for a huge chunk of time without any way to save - and after quickly doing everything I was supposed to do in that section, I had to wait something like 20 minutes doing nothing, waiting for the next event to start (I don't remember well, but I think in the first cycle you can't advance the time in any way). So it has a lot of creativity, memorable characters and atmosphere, while the gameplay itself is severely flawed. The gameplay has enough problems that I would give it a 2, but it's such a different game that, for how memorable it became to me, I give it a 4. I do have the 3DS version, will give it a try someday to see how many problems they could fix. By the way, some of the good things that Spirit Bomb pointed out about it were already present in Link's Awakening, so maybe playing LA before made me a little less impressed by MM.

By the way, some of the good things that Spirit Bomb pointed out about it were already present in Link's Awakening, so maybe playing LA before made me a little less impressed by MM. The 3DS version sucks in my opinion. It ruined the boss fights, reduced the difficulty level and streamlined many aspects due to the 3DS having less buttons than the N64 controller. It feels like a casualized remake with worse controls. You might enjoy it more, but for me the original version is better in every regard. If you think the save system of the western release of MM is unfair, the Japanese version would make you weep. There is no save system in the Japanese version. The owl statues in said version can only be used to mark locations for travel via the song of soaring, which means that unlike the western release the temples in the Jap. version have to be completed in a single sitting. I couldn't imagine trying to beat the Stone Tower Temple in one go, even with slowed down time. You'd have to be a professional speed-runner to beat that version! At any rate, I actually fully approve of the increased difficulty of Majora's Mask, not just from the new save system but also the other aspects like harder bosses, enemies and such. I'd say it's by far the most challenging 3D Zelda game and I wish Nintendo had continued to take the series in this direction.
