I don't own firearms, but I remember my physics teacher from school telling us that if we ever are in a situation where we find ourselves with a gun and we feel the need to use it in self defense or whatnot, if we dare taking it out, we must shoot no matter what, or it is very likely the same gun will be used against us.

I feel a lot of cops feel the same way at a regular basis, but they have a good point though; after seeing so many action movies where the shooter talks for too long before firing, and end ups getting shot instead, you can see where they are coming from.
