Other than the novelty of having a miniaturized PS1, unless it packs in games that you can't find on PSN, or better yet be able offer trophy support for those old games, I don't really see the practical appeal of it.
If it's function is to be an easy plug & play system for old PS1 games to play on modern TVs, you can essentially already do that by just getting them off PSN for the PS4/3 or Vita... Even if this were given to me as a gift, honestly I don't think I'd really put it to much use... Nothing more than a collectors' item or re-sellers target as far as I'm concerned.
Now, if there were going to be a Saturn-mini... That would be something to get excited about.
My nostalgia of PS1 mostly comes from X-Men Children Of The Aton, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel Vs. Capcom.
When I think of a PS1 Wolverine is the first thing that comes to mind. After that maybe Gambit, Omega Red, Magneto, Cyclops, Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Psylocke, Storm, Rogue, Juggernaut, Sabretooth, War Machine, Jin, Captain Commando, Strider, Venom, and Hulk.
I also have fond memories of Gran Turismo, Gran Turismo 2, Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat Mythologies, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Raiden Project, and FIFA games.
I really doubt any of those titles would be there, so I don't think that once this comes out it will excite me much to put 100 bucks down for it.
I do love other games too like the Street Fighter Alpha games, the Mega Man X games, the Darkstalkers games, and the Castlevania games, but I already have copies of those.
I really love the idea of it. I like to see that Ridge Racer Type 4, and Tekken 3 were already announced for it, I like those a lot. I still think it would look really nice on my media center, but I'm just being realistic with my expectations.

I've always liked Eiffel 65 and that song is one of my favorites.
I have so many thoughts about the PlayStation Classic, like what versions are we gonna get of the games? Are they gonna be the proper original ones for the regions they were back in the day? I love Final Fantasy VII but I don't want the slower 60hz NTSC version, or even worse the awful digital PSN version with tons of edited content and changes, I wouldn't accept that even as a gift, I'd just burn it and send it back to hell where it belongs.
The five games they've shown so far are such a strange list to me, if this is suppose to be about the original classic gray model with no Dual Analog or Dual Shock support, then why Tekken 3 and R4? Both of those were later titles on the system and both featured analog and vibration compatibility. They should've picked from Tekken, Tekken 2, Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer Revolution and Rage Racer for those two slots if they absolutely had to have a Tekken and Ridge Racer game on there, not Tekke3 and R4, those are simply not the right type of titles for this thing. If they were to make a PSOne Classic that featured the smaller white model with two Dual Shock controllers, THEN they could've added newer/later titles that used Dual Analog and Dual Shock, but not in this one. But since they added Tekken 3 and R4, then I gotta wonder why did they add the original JumpingFlash! when the sequel JumpingFlash!2 is superior in every way and it became the more popular and higher regarded title of the two? If they wanted to add the best/most popular of any series, why add the slightly inferior one in this case? Wild Arms is okay and all, but it's a strange edition as it wasn't very popular thanks to FF7 overshadowing it entirely at the time.
The lack of Dual Shock controllers is definitely a thing they're getting a lot of complaints about, especially since they've added games that used those functions like Tekken 3 and R4, so yeah, I understand and agree with that being weird. If this is truly a classic console focusing on the nostalgia of the original PlayStation model with the older non Dual Analog and Dual Shock games then why add newer titles that used Dual Analog and Dual Shock at all? It makes no sense and it takes up precious slots (of the already limited 20) away from far more suited titles that should've been included instead. Now we're stuck with games that don't fit what this seems to want to do and will have the Dual Analog and Dualsh Shock features absent as a result.
ALso HDMI only for a classic retro console? That makes no sense, these games were made exclusively with SDTVs in mind so why not just include at least a composite output? They could've had an HDMI model as well for those who want that kind of stuff but if I'm going to play old games I'm going to do it on an old TV where they belong and look the best by far. I don't want my games upscaled etc. and I don't own anything that accept HDMI cables, I don't have an HDTV, the closest I have are VGA monitors but this thing only supports HDMI so they're not compatible anyway. best would've of course been to have BOTH a composite AND an HDMI out. This makes it pretty much useless to me as anything other than a decorative thing to put on a shelf as it's impossible for me to play it unless I purchase an entire HDTV alongside with it.. spoiler: That ain't gon happen, bub.
I don't mind the lack of AC adapter when it's an HDMI exclusive system as all HDTVs I've seen in the last 5-6 years have had at least two USB ports on it, so that's not really a problem as it comes with a USB cable you can just plug right in. Had it come with composite cables I would've expected it to also come with a proper AC adapter. I have a charger for my phone that would fit this no problem so I wouldn't personally need to buy a separate charger but I can understand the frustration for those who have an older HDTV with no USB ports and also lack compatible chargers and have no [free] USB slots near their TVs.. although in this day and age that seems like it would at most affect maybe two or three people on the planet. Needless to say I don't agree with the outcry some people have had over this, in a world with so many compatible chargers and USB slots being added to just about everything with an electrical current going through it these days it's just not a problem anymore, and any complaints about it seem a lot more like blatant trolling than actual valid concerns.
I like how the Open button can be used to access the change disc/game menu, but I wonder if there will also be a button combo to press on the controllers to reach the menu, like some other systems have, or if they have a hidden button on the controllers for it or something. Seems a bit unintuitive forcing it to the buttons on the console only in this day and age so I'm assuming you will be able to access all that stuff via the controllers as well.
And finally there is still no info about it being available here except for one online store that's made it available for pre-order via US import. So I don't even know if they're gonna bother with it here. If/when they do, who knows, maybe they'll have a different lineup of games here seeing as so many titles were US and PAL exclusive back in the day. I'd love one with games like Retro Force and Space Debris, that'd be awesome.

Well, at least for those two, they are part of arcade racers, and arcade fighters. Even Tekken 7 is still played with a D-Pad. They may had been ready for analog sticks, and some people may play them that way, because they just play everything that way, but for the most part a D-Pad is the way to go. I understand if we were talking about a wrestling game or a sim racer, but for those a D-Pad would always be the most precise approach.

I feel that's the whole point of making these Classic consoles, to make greatest hits or at least popular games compatible with modern TVs. If you ask a Sony executive he will probably tell you that if you want to use a CRT TV, which I agree is the absolute superior way to experience these games, to use the original hardware instead. That the purpose of these consoles is to perpetuate these classics notions into modern culture.

Maybe Sony would do that, but I really doubt it as it kind of loses a big part of the experience. Having to get up to press the eject button is huge when it comes de delivering the retro feel for the SNES Classic, and the NES Classic. I would be against they adding that because most people would prefer to use just the controller to go back, and if they don't include that feature they are forced to get up and have the full experience.
Oh, and then there's the question about if they'll add stuff like Trophy support and online multiplayer over PSN.
If they do, will that also mean you'll be able to download additional PSX classic titles from PSN to fill in the gaps of the bulti in 20 game limit?
So many questions! SO FEW ANSWERS!! Curse you, SONY!
That would be nice, but I really doubt it as making quick cash is not the main purpose of these things. They just want to keep tradition relevant to newer generations, and dads. It is a model for the future, as opposed of grabbing quick cash. PlayStation never behaves this way, but it looks like it's trying to learn a few things from Nintendo. I would love if they do, and if anyone would do it, it would be them.

Usually I think these mini systems are retarded but there might be some potential in this one if they fix the whole model/texture warping problem the PS1 had. Didn't Bleem manage to do it for some games?

Apparently PSX emulation can do that with a thing called PGXP
I don't see myself buying this unless like the Nintendo classics I can easily hack and will have room to add some games to it. So far I have all the games included readily available on my PS3 and since I have a lot of PS1 Classics on there I think I will still most likely have most when the whole lineup is revealed. It's also $100, and doesn't include a power adapter(why do companies do this, it was stupid with newer 3DS models and it's still stupid).

If this is hackable it becomes an instant buy for me, but I don't have my hopes up.
I respect that they went with their original controller as opposed of using their controller response to the N64.
I know having the DualShock would have been nicer, but it is still admirable they admit their beginnings with a controller much more closer to the SNES one.
I also admire they called this the PSOne Classic, also admitting their beginnings, that the console was originally directly designed by Nintendo. Plus it is a great marketing decision.
In a way if someone is a Nintendo Classic consoles collector, this is definitely part of that collection.
The PSOne inspired modern PlayStation consoles, but unlike the N64 it was the natural sequel to the Super Nintendo, and the library gives it away with the Mega Man X, Castlevania, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and above all, JRPG games like Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy, Legend Of Mana, Front Mission, Tales, Breath Of Fire, etc., that were sequels to their Super Nintendo releases.
The N64 was more like a PC port machine full of FPS games, racing, and sports games; all with a Western size controller. Which is why it doesn't surprise me that Rare took the Xbox route afterwards. The PS1 was more of a spiritual successor to the Super Nintendo than the N64 ever was.
It looks like a well made collectors item, on par with Nintendo's Classic Editions and above Sega's, Atari's, and SNK's efforts. Get Metal Gear Solid on there and I start to get interested.
