Some of you guys might think I'm a tree-hugging liberal that hates cars, but let me tell you, I'm absolutely not that. I love the freedom that comes with owing a car. It feels so damn liberating. I've lately been thinking more about and appreciate driving and my car in general because the city I live in has absolutely fucked over the car owning experience here by putting up toll stations everywhere and doubling the price of each pass-through. I'm forced to take the buss from now on when going to work or university as it's simply not feasible paying 5 bucks to school and home. Combine that with no parking space or paid parking space and it's simply ridiculous. Also, my landowner has fucked us over by taking getting another car that just stays fucking immobile on our parking spot. Now my roommate has me parked in every day since he uses his car despite the ridiculous tolls. I never get to use my car anymore except for when I'm going to my home city. Anyways this will be a driving appreciation thread, so I will not tolerate people talking about climate changes and why we take public transportation, because that's not what this thread is about. Make your own damn thread.

Driving is freedom. Freedom is driving. I love being able to drive wherever I want, whenever I want. I am not tied down to the dogma of schedules. I'm not tied down to the directions others tell me that I have to go. I can make last minute plans for my family, and we can go whenever the hell we feel like it. Driving is amazing freedom.

This is not an image of my car, but it's the same model and color. Well it used to look like that, but the years has faded it so it's not very shiny or strikingly red anymore. It's a 98 Mitsubishi Carisma. Cheap car, but it has a lot of personality and for what I paid for it, I couldn't be happier. I've only had it repaired once of the 5 years I've owned it (suspension broke on one side). As I've said it has a lot of personality and we've had many good memories with it. It has a lot of small problems like the window doesn't work on the driver's side, the back left door sometimes gets jammed and the suspension is terrible in the winter when it's cold. It's my first car, and my only hope is that it lasts until I'm finished at university. Anyways, if it breaks I'm just going to wait it out and not have a car for a couple of years, as there's no point anymore owning a car in this fucking piece of shit city.

My old man had a 1979 911 SC when I was a kid. We'd drive for hours just cruising the coast every Sunday. It was like my church. I learned to drive stick in that car. I can still hear the exhaust note. He took off the catalytic converter that the government forced on those cars for emissions. You could get away with that back then. The smell of the German leather and the gasoline was magic. Hopefully I'll get one of my own someday.

What really inspired me to make this thread was that one of my friends is going to scrap his first car. And what's special about it is that he was the first of us to get a driver's license and a car. Over here you got to be 18 to get one. He's a year older than me, and he was the only one I knew that I was friends with that had a car until a year later when I got my own. It was a piece of shit car, really. I think it was an Audi from the late 80s' of early 90s'. It was nicknamed The Red Beauty, which was ironic since it faded really badly to the point where the most red part of the car was pink and the most faded part was white. I thought he was going tl scrap it a long time ago, because that thing barely ran most of the time. That never stopped us though from cruising around town listening to a magical mixtape he made. One of the great memories I have from that car is that we used to drive to our neighboring city to get milkshakes. It was a place there that served 0.8L of milkshakes, great taste too. There are so many other great memories too, and it's a shame it's going to be scrappef now. We decided to celebrate it in the best way though. We drove to get milkshakes from that special place, but we had to use another car, because we didn't trust the old one due to the radiator leaking. We brought back the milkshakes, got in the old Red Beauty, dropped a bucket of water into the radiator, put in the magical mixtape (I had to hold the stereo in place because it too, doesn't work properly anymore) and we cruised around town. We spun around in an empty parking lot, burning rubber and tried to do a handbrake turn (didn't work out though since the handbrake doesn't work either). We drove around until the motor started getting hot. So glad we did this, the best way to say goodbye to a car. I don't think my friend is really that sad though, he never really used it that much the latest years due to how broken it was, and now he bought an almost brand new Mercedes. I don't think his new car has any personality though, looks so generic. I get it though, having a new car gives a better driving experience, but with the Audi I always knew when he came to visit. That familiar unsmooth engine sound and that super faded color.

Currently, my wife and I have a 2012 and 2013 Ford Focus to keep down the costs of gasoline. My job is 20 miles away from work, and my wife used to work even further than that. We bought them both new (and they're paid for!), and we love them. scipioafricanus thinks I need to upgrade for more room with the family, but the kids fit fine, for now. I plan on driving them both into the ground.

Some dumb ass teenager rear ended, and totaled, my first car. It broke my heart, since there were so many fond memories with that car. I still think about the first time I took my girlfriend (now my wife) on the toll way to a theme park called Great America out here. I was white knuckling it while pretending to be cool, since I had never driven on the highway. I had it checked by my uncle to make sure everything was cool. Apparently, the hood didn't lock down, because it popped open as soon as I hit 65mph. That scared the hell out of us, but we pulled over quickly, and all was well. Losing a first car does have some sentimentality to it.

I love driving too. I have an Inline 6 X3. I do enjoy VR driving, Gran Turismo, etc., but the real thing is a pleasure, specially after you add a nice subwoofer, which I did. That said, I've been notorious for taking the Greyhound for long distances, and I don't mind it at all. I also love going on the plane too. And of course boat rides are also fun with the right company 😉. I took those pics myself.

You should have got that General Lee Charger. Nah. I always wanted a black Monte Carlo SS edition from the 1980s (1988?). Either that or a Ford F-series truck with a 12" + lift. Those two are for two completely unrelated things though.

Ah, yes. I remember getting my licence. Finally, after all that trial and error with driving lessons, I didn't have to walk, train, bus or cycle everywhere.
I hate the city for many reasons. One of them is that if you're driving one wrong corner, and your burning another 5 - 15 minutes of time and fuel, because it's a maze of one way streets and roads. Plus, all the parking meters. Better to take the train and walk everywhere.
When I can, I want to get into making my own bio-diesel. It needs a modified diesel engine, but it'd be better than getting ripped off at the pump all the time. I'm lucky my work is so close to home.
