Automobiles are ok when there is public transportation available, but when a country forces you to own one is when I get pissed. They're much more expensive and less green than public transportation, and the amount of impermeable surface that roads create is absolutely disgusting.
And let's not forget how many lives drinking & driving takes per year in America. I hear about this shit on the news EVERY DAY. The only ones who benefit from this are towing companies and auto-body shops, which "helps stimulate the economy!".
America is such an evil country. Sorry Balder but driving is only fun for those who see it as a hobby. I'd much rather fly a kite.

You can't discriminate against environmentalists like me by forbidding them from expressing their opinion. And what's wrong with walking? I get much more enjoyment from walks than I do from gaming. Plus walking is good for you. The body needs sunlight and exercise to stay healthy. I took a very long walk through my state's capital city in rainy weather with an unbrella to keep me dry last month, and it was one of the most enjoyable walks I've had all year. I saw grebes, canada geese, and ducks in a pond, and I did lots of introspection along the way. It was wonderful.

I like walking, too. Particularly in nature. The best walks are the ones without a destination. Just walking for the sake of walking.
Walking has that in common with driving. (See what I did there? That's a segue.)
The best cruises aren't on the main roads, they're on the back ways, through the woods, along the coast. A road with lots of twists and turns. Roll down the windows, put the top down, and roll through the country between second and fourth gear. That's where it's at.
This thread is bringing back memories for me of when I first moved out on my own. At two or three in the morning I'd just get in my car and drive. Just because the streets were empty and no one could tell me not to. I'd drive for hours, never getting anywhere. Sometimes I'd listen to music, but mostly just in silence. The best was when it was raining. The constant drum of the rain and the windshield wipers is sorta comforting when you got the heater blasting. The way the street lights reflect off of the wet pavement can't be as easily admired when the road is full of other cars. It's a weird feeling to pull up to a red light and just sit there, knowing that no one else is coming, but waiting for the green anyway.

Dan E. Kool you really hit the nail there. I'll chime in on driving without music. One of the most surreal experiences one can have in life is driving for the first time after getting one's license. Just being completely alone and without music felt just weird, like I was doing something illegal. But right there and then, I felt so free. Also, driving without music is soothing. Just go on autopilot and listen to the engine, preferably at night when there's no traffic.

Dan E. Kool Balder, yes, driving without music also has its place. There are a lot of dirt trails in the woods near my house that if you have any kind of distraction you can literally die because many sections are cliffs, and it is all high altitude. It is totally worth it because the danger keeps you present to appreciate your surroundings, and if you drive at night it is even more surreal with the Moon and the stars above your sunroof. Now, I wouldn't drive there in a rainy night for sure, but those mountains lead to pavement highways no one uses where you can drive for hours alone, and also appreciate their scenery too, and you can drive there when it rains. I took some pics of those roads too: By the way, the dirt roads I mentioned before are good for walking too. I take my dog there even if there is snow. California is notorious for not having snow, but because of the high altitude you can always count for it during winter. That's my dog Max (short for Maximilian).

I drive a 2006 Honda element with a blue and silver paint job. I have 125300 miles on it and I've done nothing too it except have the oil changed and give it the usual maintenance like tires and other things. The only thing that has ever gone wrong with it was the ac condenser fan gave out when we first bought it but that was replaced under warranty. Other than the fact that the CD player doesn't work in it anymore and the radio had to be reset and needs a code to get it to work which I ended up losing and now I cant use the radio even though it works. It's very roomy on the inside and you have lots of leg room. Only seats 4 but thats enough people for me since I rarely ever have people in the back.
It's been an Indiana car for more then half of its life now it resides in a state where there is no rust to worry about. It's awd system is excellent in the snow and works great. The looks of the vehicle grows on you over time and it really looks different than other suv's out there especially in a world where every car looks the same. You can fold the seats up onto the sides and have a ton of room to haul stuff with. Rubberized flooring is easy to clean and doesn't get dirty like carpet does. The 2.4L 4 cylinder engine that was used in the Honda accord was used again in the element and has proven to be a reliable and durable engine. It might be a bit under powered but not that much. Perhaps the one thing I hate about my element is the small gas tank they gave it. It's not designed for long distance travel. It has some seat tears in the drivers side seat but thats a common problem for the 2003 to 2006 model year elements.
I swear by Honda and Toyota and I would buy another one of there cars if I had to get rid of my element. Really would like to someday get a Toyota fj cruiser but they are a real pig on gas mileage. The car I have is rust free and has no gunk built up in the engine bay. It's a surprise that the car is rust free considering it was driven in an area where it snowed and they put salt on the road to melt the ice yet has no rust. Probably because it was always hosed down after winter.

I love a good drive but my daily driver is a 2007 VW Golf TDI Pacific... it sounds like a canal boat, gets good mileage though. Looking at getting a 2003-05 Nissan Skyline 350GT in February, gotta wait though cause I legally can't drive it on my P's cause it's V6.

It's a weird feeling to pull up to a red light and just sit there, knowing that no one else is coming, but waiting for the green anyway. I love driving without the radio on in the rain. My son is 8 now, and he is a gabber mouth, but when we drive in the dark at night, there is something mystical about it. Life becomes more intrinsic while observing either the urban environment or the sublime beauty of nature. (I live in between both.) Everyone I know becomes self reflective...even my boy. My father does that too, and he isn't known for being reflective as a person. Sometimes I just get caught up in the sounds and sights. Other times, I get caught up in a memory from long ago. Driving in the rain is powerful, and I can't seem to understand why.
I love driving.

I just got my license a couple of months ago. What Ola said about how it was driving for the first time was exactly what it felt like. I don’t have my own car at the moment, but I get to borrow my dad’s car since he’s away on some work thing. Man that car is bad. The air condition or the fan doesn’t work properly, so it’s basically un-drivable during the rain because of the dew. And now it’s also freezing outside so there’s frost on the windows, even on the insides! I love driving, but it looks like I won’t be able to drive that much during the next 3 or so months…
