I just remembered another major reason why I support public transportation over driving: littering. Hundreds of thousands of americans get away with throwing trash out their car window everyday in the US, and there isn't a single road that doesn't have at least one piece of trash discarded alongside it. You could never get away with chucking shit out of a train or bus window.
I volunteer with my township in cleaning up roadside trash. It's tedious, a waste of time and I shouldn't have to do it. Nobody should.

Complaining in this thread does no one any good, because this is a thread about appreciating driving, not hating side effects of driving.

I just got my license a couple of months ago. What Ola said about how it was driving for the first time was exactly what it felt like. I don’t have my own car at the moment, but I get to borrow my dad’s car since he’s away on some work thing. Man that car is bad. The air condition or the fan doesn’t work properly, so it’s basically un-drivable during the rain because of the dew. And now it’s also freezing outside so there’s frost on the windows, even on the insides! I love driving, but it looks like I won’t be able to drive that much during the next 3 or so months… It actually got warmer now, so I can drive again! Thank god for Global Warming xD (Edit: <--Joke )

Driving long distances, no matter where you are in the world, will always make you appreciate Earth's geography. In the US, it is great to drive along the Atlantic coast and feel the misty cool, yet salty breeze blow into your face on a fall day. From there, you can travel through the dense forests of North Carolina and witness nature's beauty and spot a bear or two, and then hit up the Smokey Mountains and watch the mist slowly dissipate as the radiant warm beams from the sun rise over the rounded mountains. From the east to the west, the beauty never stops. Some don't like the flat land of the midwest, but I love it. You can see great landscapes in great cities like Memphis, Chicago, or St. Louis from miles away. Then the drive requires you to become introspective as you pass through quiet and serene corn and soy fields which seem to last forever. Then it happens. The Earth around you begins to rise as you hit the towering majestic peaks of the great Rocky Mountains. Not much in the world resembles these beauties as you gasp for air as you twist and turn around Pike's Peak in Colorado. The white peaked silvery earthen towers stretch as a wall created by God himself to control the weather around the beautifully pristine silver rivers which twist and turn around them. When you finally make it through the mountains, there is quite a sight to behold as you see the deserts of the southwest. The strangely shaped rusty buttes will have you watching with wonder. From there, you can head to the great forests of California or the misty lands of Oregon or Washington and really see the splendor of nature itself. Finally, the magnificent beaches of the Pacific Ocean will have you gazing out to the sea in wonder of what lies beyond.
As anyone can see, driving is an amazing experience, and everyone should experience the freedom that comes with it.
Curiosity can lead you to any of these places, and the freedom of a car can give you to travel to any of these places on your terms. You can experience it the way you want to. There are no time limits as with public transportation. There are no predetermined routes, if you decide to go off the beaten path. The automobile gives you freedom to experience it your way, and that is simply amazing.

A friend of mine had a custom van at one point. Pimped it out with lights, stereo and in the back he had 4 seats facing each other. It was sort of like a small hobby room almost. I got to drive it for a vacation we had together because he lost his license in speeding. That van sure had a powerful motor, totally blew my expectations out of the water. It was a Mercedes V-Class.

We had one like this growing up. <VW Van Video> That's pretty cool. My Mom had a station wagon, and I had a love/hate relationship with that thing. There were more bumper stickers and rust on it than solid metal. It was great to go on long trips though. Unfortunately, someone had to sit on the hump, and that sucked ass. I'm glad I am the oldest, because I never had to sit there. When the mini-van came out, I was grossed out by it. It was such a soccer mom thing. But a GMAC Van or a VW Van? That was cool. What was it like to drive in the back of one as a kid? I don't imagine that it had great suspension.

dschult3Vanagons have surprisingly good suspension. The Syncro (4x4) model is a pretty capable off-road vehicle, believe it or not. Add the pop-top, the fold down bed and the mini kitchen in the back and you got a sweet camper. In the days before minivans, VW actually marketed the Bus as a station wagon competitor...

Well, I suppose they would have to with all of that heavy glass surrounding the vehicle.

Even with that wimpy flat four, we towed a boat up to the lake every year. The Vanagon huffed and puffed the whole way up, but she made it!
