I'm pretty sure E3 is dead after its 25th year in 2020. I could be wrong though. Microsoft and Nintendo could hit it out of the park this year, and Sony may claim that they were "testing the waters" and return to their old business patterns like airlines do when one airline sticks its neck out and tries something new. Oligopolies tend to do that frequently. However, if sales don't dip, I'm pretty sure this is the death knell of E3 as we no it.
I've been in the camp that E3 is meaningless in the modern era for years now, but as a classic gamer, it saddens me to see such an important event dissolve into irrelevancy. I know that other forms of media exist, but does it bother any of you to see it go away, or is it like the passing of the torch from horse and buggy carriages to cars?

dschult3 - I think it's relevant to have a few days of big announcements by the major publishers, but the physical event itself, besides becoming very irrelevant (Nintendo did very well with just their online videos), the entire thing is too anachronistic in how it's presented. You know, the big stages, the awkward shows, the fake over-excited presenters, the misleading trailers or teasers that are just the name of the game followed by a thunderous applause... It's everything just too cringeworthy. I mean, look at this: If there's a way to repair it, that would be to transform it into an actual event instead of a 90s ad: present a few minutes of gameplay to the audience (while playing it live, preferably), let the developers answer some questions from journalists, don't try to make it look like the fucking olympics. It must be smaller and more focused on presenting what new games/consoles are going to be released that year.

Hasn't Nintendo been shifting away from E3 for a while too, with their Nintendo Direct? Not looking good for E3 right now. Never cared much for E3 though, hopefully game award shows go extinct too.

Yeah, they've been doing the tree house thing. They have taken the one foot in and one foot out the door method. It reminds me of how soda companies like Coke and Pepsi really don't have to advertise, yet they do so they don't lose the 10% who are swayed by commercials. I hate the cringe worthiness of it as well, Cervantes. I've hated it for a long time now. A part of me doesn't want an icon to die like this though. You're absolutely right about the need to re image the entire event. I'm surprised the big companies haven't tried to do that themselves. They must all be reading from the same PR book. After that Microsoft event in Mexico City, it shows you that money cannot buy into the heart of modern culture. It was so artificial, it hurt to watch.

It is the right decision. They have nothing to announce that will wow people. Last E3 they had what the mainstream considers cool games, and people was still dissatisfied in comparison to other E3s.
That E3 they announced Resident Evil VII, plus fully playable on VR, a remake of Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy XV release date, The Last Guardian release date, PlayStation VR, Star Wars VR, a bunch of their first party AAA games like Detroid, Lost Legacy, Horizon, Battlefront, and Spider-Man, all at the same time, it is hard to top that. Even KOF XIV, and Gran Turismo Sport were on the credits that year.
You can't just have mind blowing E3s every year. It is not sustainable.
For me the most mind blowing thing this generation hands down has been VR gaming. A whole different level, it is the like second comimg of Super Mario 64. However not everyone can afford it, and the tech has a lot of space for improvement:
Like being wireless, having higher resolution, higher frame rate, a wider field of view, and also people simply getting used to it. It is going to take a while, but there is still a lot of potential in that tech to keep mind blowing those that don't get sick so easily.
Of course AR is coming too. The whole Mix Reality thing is getting branded already even if we don't have that tech available yet, but it is coming. These are very exciting times, but it all takes a lot of time, and planning.

I never understood why anyone would expect to be blown away every year, yet the bearded trolls online seem to throw fits if it isn't "up to their standards." To me as a high schooler, it was cool to check out E3 to see what was new for the next year. I never really expected to be blown away on a consistent basis. I wonder where that mentality began in the first place. I know every company is trying to outdo each other, but it was only when the next generation of console came out that I really expected to see great changes. The in generational changes were only to be incremental, and that is all I expected.

Maybe Sony saw the disappointment that Xbox was greeted with last time (few exciting exclusives) and decided that since they don't have anything on the way, it's better to avoid the bad press and just skip the whole thing.
It also tells me that the rumors of a PS5 being imminent are most likely false.

Maybe the PS 5 will be a thing, so we may have another to go, but once it goes all digital, E3 will be totally dead.

dschult3 I've heard that, too. After this it'll be streaming services like Netflix, but for games. I'll bet Microsoft does it first. I don't know if Sony will survive the shift.

They've already begun with Xbox Game Pass. It's a pretty good deal, but I have way too many physical games to play to even consider it.

Try to keep up, Balder. Can't say it much clearer.

You'll need some kind of box to actually run these games. You can also stream them I guess, but we all saw how shitty that works in reality with Sony's Gaikai.

I suppose I will have to stock up on my physical media in the mean time. I have plenty now, but you know that Chicago tax will be implemented world wide eventually.

I'm not talking about right now or next week, I'm talking about the future. And in the future TVs will be able to play games from the cloud. Or via an Xbox dongle. Or something. There was a time not so long ago when Netflix was a mail order service because internet sucked back then. Look at us now, streaming HD movies. It'll happen. And when it does, I want you to remember this moment.
