I've had 2 fat models now and one has a problem where it will read games but take up to 2 minutes just to get past the loading screen in a game. The other one has a disc drive motor problem where it broke down. One was a 39001 and the other a 30001 model. I have had the play station 2 slim 75001 and it stopped reading games but thats because I wore out the laser from so much play time and the fact that its over 10 years old now. It still works just wont read games. I just obtained a white ps2 slim 79001 model and apart from me having to replace the power button with another one it works perfectly. The part that the ps2 has that allows the button to be pressed behind the power button broke so I scrapped the part out of the 75001 and put it in the white ps2. Now it works perfectly, obviously not a matching color though since the replacement power button was black and the ps2 slim i have now is white and not black.
I also got a white ps2 controller with it that goes with the system. After having 2 fat models now with both of them having problems I think I've had it with the ps2 fats and I won't be buying another one.

I've had my fat PS2 since 2001 and it still works fine. I never knew the PS2 ran into problems like that.

I do prefer the Slim's, but I tend to like top loading console's in general. One less mechanical part to break, etc. Edit: Just to continue with this, "my" first PS2 was actually a friend's. She had gone to school in Japan for a year, and lent it to me. By the time she returned, the slims were out, and I picked one of those up. Her original fat PS2, as well as the japanese one she picked up while there still work fine. My slim was also working okay until I sold it last year when I was clearing out my physical collection. I had also inherited another Fat PS2 from my roommate, which I ended up shipping out to Maestro when he was looking for a replacement PS2 a while back. According to him, it is still working fine. That said...I also have a friend who went through 3 of the Fat models, so your mileage may vary. I do really like top-loading consoles better though No motor on the disc tray, discs aren't stuck if the console breaks, etc. I'm sad that the Wii mini isn't mode-able, or I'd probably have one of those. Similarly, if someone ever fit the guts of one of the original hardware-backwards-compatible PS3's into the case of one of the super-slim's, I'd be tempted to pick one up...of course, since I've moved to an almost entirely digital collection, that's become less of an issue. Now I only have to worry about hard drive failure

I had like 3 or 4 PS2 breaking on me, which makes me think maybe one of the reasons the PS2 sold so well is because many of us were buying replacements.
The library is still the richest in consoles though, specially with all those collections.
