This movie is a semi-serious spoof. You got to love how over the top it is for a martial arts flick. The cheapish costumes add to this.
Kurt Russell is like a decoy protagonist, because the action revolves around his character, but he's an absolute clown next to his more competent sidekick.
It's all good fun. And thank goodness we haven't heard of that remake that was supposed to be coming.

It's a spoof, but instead of just making fun of the martial arts movies it's spoofing, it does a sincere homage to them. I rewatched it last year, alongside other John Carpenter movies, and it holds up perfectly well. Carpenter's partnership with Kurt Russel must've been one of the best things for cinema in the 80s.

There just aren't any other filmmakers like Carpenter. He's an absolute genius.

Apparently a week is quite a bit longer than I remember. That said, here's my take on the movie:
"I always thought this movie was going to be entertaining, but I had no idea it was going to be this good as well. It crazy and zany enough to where I have no real clue to what is going on, but the way it is presented is perfect and makes it all the better. It is self-aware enough to be funny, but restraints itself enough to keep being funny. Kurt Russel is great and he has some seriously great moments. There are so many fantastic moments that I do not know what to bring up, but I must say that that knife throwing scene was my favorite in the movie. Unexpected and hilarious, just like the essence of this movie. It could have perhaps be a little bit shorter, but a great movie nevertheless. Very strong 4/5 with the potential of a 4.5/5 on a rewatch."
