I'm genuinely curious, since I don't remember Microsoft Office being locked behind a paywall with my previous 2009 Windows XP desktop computer. Could be wrong (my memory is a bit fuzzy).

They're not the only ones who've adopted it. Adobe are doing it as well. There are third party programs that only need you to pay once. I know Linux and Android come with a few built in office programs.
