This game is legendary. I replayed it thoroughly two years ago or so, and it was a blast - it has some of the most deep level designs for a platformer from that era, especially when you replay the game as Tails or Knuckles. The levels are huge, use the full extent of the characters' habilities and have a lot of secrets to uncover.
For a long time I preferred the more straight-forward levels from Sonic 2, but nowadays I'm more of a Sonic 3&K man. Great music, graphics, very well done physics, this game has everything.
Except for the Barrel of DOOOOOOOOOOOM, as centipede said. But they got rid of that in the Saturn port (Sonic Jam), so Sega knows for a long time that they dropped the ball there.
