I remember typing out a post for this thread like a week and not sure what happened to it. Must have been on the night I was drinking lol.
It's a horror classic for me, but one I actually prefer to watch in the middle of winter since the cold fits the atmosphere of the movie. Whether this or Big Trouble in Little China is my favorite Carpenter/Russell combo changes from time to time depending on my mood. As already said, the special effects and the ending are standouts. This is next to the werewolf transformation scene in American Werewolf London when it comes to impressive practical effects.
Oh, and also my first experience with The Thing franchise was the PS2 game. I haven't played it since it was newly released and would like to check it out again sometime. It's probably better than The Thing (2011) atleast, even if it hasn't aged well.
