So Doom 3 is one of those games that I've always been interested in trying. It's far from the top of my PC game want list at the moment, but I wouldn't mind snagging a copy.
However it's been brought to my attention that the original version of Doom 3 doesn't run well/at all on modern PCs for some reason, which is supposedly why publisher Bethesda released that "remastered" version of Doom 3, the BFG edition.
The thing is, I just want to experience vanilla Doom 3 on the PC the way it was originally made. I want to be able to appreciate the graphics the way they originally were, the gameplay mechanics the way they originally were, and so on. That's why I want to know if anyone here can confirm whether or not classic Doom 3 runs on modern computers with Windows 10.
I would appreciate that.

I don't have the game myself, but a quick look at the Steam forums for the original release (before the BFG Edition) and at its PC Gaming Wiki page tells me it works just fine, though they list one or two possible bugs that are easily solvable by changing the configuration files. There's an up-to-date guide here (you pretty much just create a cfg file on notepad and copy what is in the guide, nothing complicated; only the first portion of the guide matters). Again: I can't confirm it myself, but on that guide they tested it on Windows 10 and it works.

If it runs Crysis it should run Doom.

If it runs Crysis it should run Doom. Computers don't work that way. If a system isn't optimized for an outdated program, then it won't run. That logic is the same as inserting a Sega Saturn game into a Sega Dreamcast and expecting it to play.

Huh, I thought I remember you saying in the past that one of the games that inspired you to upgrade your PC around 2004 was Doom 3?

Spirit Bomb - I don't remember saying that, as I never bought Doom 3 and only played it in short bursts on a friend's pc. It's possible that I upgraded thinking about getting it then never did, as I do remember upgrading a pc for Half-life 2 and Far Cry, and those were released close to Doom 3. As a side note, I never got into Doom or in early FPSs in general. I think I never enjoyed much labyrinthine level designs, which is my constant criticism even in some 2d games and the reason why Sonic CD is my least favorite in that series. When I played Doom or Duke Nukem in the 90s, I was just lost most of the time, so I never even finished or have much nostalgia for them (I finished Quake, but I'm also not crazy about it). FPS games only clicked with me after Half-Life and System Shock 2, which, despite having complex levels sometimes, mostly in SS2, have more variation in graphics so it's easier to make a mental map of the areas. Also, despite the complexity, the maps make more sense, as if they were credible places. Thief, for example, is another one that I never finished, as I got to some very trippy maps that were really confusing, long and somewhat annoying. I just don't enjoy that school of abstract level design. I do like Thief's stealth gameplay, though, and want to try it again down the line. I know that Doom 3 and the newer ones aren't like that, but the series lost me at the first two and never got my interest again.
