Hi everyone! From the beginning of this millenium onwards we have seen many reboots happening, a few to the liking of most fans, most to their dismay for different reasons. But what is in YOUR mind? Which series do you see so much more potential than execution that you would go "I'd restart this!"?
---
Me? I'd reboot Pokémon.
Pokémon is a series that is dear to me. Like a few of you I was a teen when its popularity exploded like nothing else I've ever seen, and contrary to what most adults used to say, Pokémon is still around. However, the series that I fell in love with seemed to have some lows and highs since I dropped it after its second generation.
Ok, first I'm assuming most of you don't know what Pokémon was about back in Red, Green and Blue, so I'm going to summarize here: the first generation of this series (4 gameboy games and later on 2 N64 games) set you in a peaceful post-apocalyptic world as a kid who wants to raise monsters (the wildlife of this new world) as a trainer to be a champion in the tournament of his region. Right off the bat I can understand if this description feels alien to you, because guess what? Some very basic details regarding this series stop being developed on or get retconned later. Did you know the original Mew fossil was stated to have been found in a jungle in South America? Or that gengar is literally a doppelGENGAR, and that is why he looks like a clefable's shadow? Or that the series, like many others, isn't really how its creator imagined it at first?
That reminds me of how years after I stopped enjoying Poké stuff, and the anime movies just pissed me off, I just left the TV on while CN was airing one of the later, supposedly crappier, Poké movies, and the movie surprised me enough to make me stop what I was doing. It had a plot that was more interesting than "tournament invitation" or "kidnapping of an uninteresting character's parent", it was about saving a town from cataclysm (lower stakes can be more interesting, you know?). What surprised me was that the movie had a bit more balls, fossil pokés attacked the protagonists as skeletons, and after many years the series finally had a moment in which you could ask "if a pokémon can walk, think, act, and even look like a human, why is it treated like a beast?".
Things like that are what make me think that if I could, I would reboot the series. I'd change around some evolutions and re-think some of the pokés, all those bad designs could go away, uh? Backstory would need fixing, it really is a work of constant retconns as of now; for those who don't know when the mega-evolutions were introduced the whole series before it was retconned as being in a different world, in which the events of the world in those games may not have happened; so why not retconn the whole deal? I'd really like to change it to something that wasn't held back by company policies so devs could have some freedom with story and content, like, "why is Jynx called that if she's that ugly?" and "don't people get killed by stuff like that?"; those things are valid for a bunch of human-looking pokés, btw.

Not so much a reboot, well...
I'd sorta reboot Phantasy Star Universe/Online 1. Sega of Japan does not give a shit about bringing PSO2 to US/Euro but today we have the expertise and the nostalgia from former fans to make a reboot of the former games happen. If they brought PSO1 back to PSN/XBL with a bit of tweaking, they would have a sure fire hit.
If I could, I would make a spiritual successor with all the elements people loved. Maybe even set in the classic Algol star system.

I stopped really playing pokemon when 6th gen came out. I have played every game up to that point even some of the spin offs. 6th gen has its pro's and con's like any other gen. I just dont like where the series has been going.
My favorite generation of pokemon is the third. Now that has its advantages and disadvantages too. But I honestly think people were expecting too much from it thats why it gets so much hate. I love the 3rd gen spin off games on the gamecube.

Mario
That's right, Mario. I'm so sick of one of the greatest icons in all of video games being in some of the most base and samey games of this generation. I know people will argue that it's still a well designed platforming franchise, but I honestly could not care less if it is. Sure it's well designed, but that's just because they just keep rehashing the same levels, bosses, and mechanics. Look at New Super Mario bros Wii, so many levels where either ripped from SMW, edited versions of old levels, or just the same old sand, lava, or ice levels. They had a really refreshing thing going with Galaxy, which was not too long ago, so I'm sure they haven't ran out of ideas yet.
Though I guess until they figure something out we will be stuck with New Super Luigi Brothers Wooly Land Mansion Wii U 2
I dunno, maybe now that Mario Maker is out Nintendo will finally be done with selling $60 level packs. I do have to applaud them for Mario Maker actually, if they keep giving it updates here and there then it really does seem that they have accepted Mario's age. They should let the community deal with normal Mario while they release special things like Galaxy once in a blue moon.

On the note of pokemon, I wish they would remake Black and White and have one small Edit...
SPOILERS
They should go back ditch the whole "Ghetsis actually wants to take over the world" thing. It was SO disappointing to see such an original storyline be made totally boring and eye-rollingly cliche. I seriously just can't wrap my mind around the fact that they threw away their most interesting storyline to date in the last ten minutes of the game. Though I guess you could see it coming from a mile away, with Ghetsis accidentally being like "I will rule --I mean WE!" all the time. I mean come on, talk about eye-rolling. "I-- I mean WE!" give me a break, that was soooo lame.

I know that story was really not that bad. They really tried that time to actually put a decent story into the games for once and it almost worked out. But of course now we are back to the same stories as before in the newer games.

I want more Contra games. I did like the new Super Mario Bros. series. In the case of Mario more of the same actually worked for me. But that's just me. I also liked 3D World, even more than the Galaxy games that were also really good. I like Super Mario Maker, but at the same time it saddens me that it may be the end for another New Super Mario Bros. release, or Super Luigi which I also liked.
Another underrated reboots are the new Sonic The Hedgehog games. Episode I and Episode II are quite fun.
But like I said I'm happy with those. However I wasn't that happy with Hard Corps Uprising which is a great game, but it doesn't feel like a Contra entirely. I just want more Shattered Soldier type of Contra, with the same level design Nobuya Nakasato is known for.

A new Battle Arena Toshinden would be awesome. Then let Takara do the soundtrack just as before when they made the soundtrack for the originals. I'd buy that shit day 1.

manicottimafia, stratogustav, I can understand wanting to reboot Mario or Contra, but what about those series is so wrong that you would rather start over? centipedeYou know, I don't really like Phantasy Star after the first game, so I can understand someone wanting to go back to most basic form of Phantasy Star. I definitely wouldn't destroy a whole planet if I intended on making a sequel... About Pokémon: lukefonfabre388, it's all about character design. When the 3 main legendary pokés were revealed and they looked like medabots, most people weren't that invested in getting to know what would come next - also, inability to transfer pokés. Sure, DX was a cool story, and the Latias movie is one of the few pokémon movies I don't dislike, but there are some cons to it... If I could I would revise most character designs; I feel that they could have gotten away with releasing less pokés if they delivered something else instead. manicottimafia, the amount of badly developed plot points in the series is a bit saddening. I specially think bad of them introducing those specialized groups of people such as the dragon clan and never letting you see or have any of it.

@spider Super Mario Bros. nothing, I already explained that I love it as is. Contra I already explained too. Uprising was very good but it did not feel like a Contra. It felt more like Strider with guns.
Similar to Lords Of Shadow that felt like an Uncharted/God Of War/Shadow Of The Colossus, which is awesome but it didn't feel like a Castlevania. Even Bloodborne feels more like a real Castlevania.

I think it was mainly hardware related issues that caused the inability to transfer pokemon. But you could get a lot of those pokemon if you had a copy of Colosseum, xd gale of darkness, or firered and leafgreen. Thats how I got mine.

stratogustavYou didn't explain. Unless Uprising retconned everything about Contra before it, why would you recycle everything about it? lukefonfabre388Once you train a pokémon to lvl 80 or so you won't feel great about needing to do it once more. I bet most people who played very hard the first games were the first to drop the series when it jumped to GBA.

I bet most people who played very hard the first games were the first to drop the series when it jumped to GBA. I trained my typhloshion on my silver up to level 89. That took freaking forever to do and lots of dedication. Spent a lot of time going back and fourth through the elite four over and over so I could level up. I had a pokemon that could almost single handedly beat red. Then my save file deleted itself one day and I lost everything. I still have my original pokemon sapphire save file thanks to the lack of a save battery. 3rd gen does not deserve the hate it gets.

spidershinobi basically what I said is that Uprising is a good game but it doesn't feel like a real Contra even while sharing the elements, it feels like its own game, mostly like a Strider with guns than a Contra. The Castlevania series as of right now is just another example of the same situation with the Lords Of Shadow series not feeling like actual Castlevania games. At least for Castlevania, Bloodborne is a good substitution, also Bloodstained looks like it will be another good one. For Mega Man X, Mighty No.9 looks like it will be another good substitution. However for Contra there is nothing.
