We all know the Atari 7800 had no chance in the race against the NES no matter how good it could of been, But as a stand alone console it could of been a lot more.
The main problem with the console was a lack of games. I could name five absolute must haves and maybe another five that's worth having and that's it. The 7800 was like the Wii U of its time in that it's a great piece of hardware but was marketed wrong and at the end just didn't have the games because of its short life span.
I love the look of the 7800 and think it's the best looking console of its generation. The NES and Master System look great but the 7800 is the only console that looks like it belongs in the 80's. And the best feature the console had was backwards compatibility with the 2600. But back to what the console could of done to be better which is games. What games should of got a 7800 release?.
Yars Revenge 2 should of been made for the 7800
Frenzy, the sequel to Berserk
Joust 2
Millipede
Haunted House 2
Break Out 3 with paddle controller support.
Vanguard 2
Enduro 2
Defender and Defender 2
Tron Deadly Disks
Tron the arcade
Snafu
What other games do you guys think the 7800 should of got?.

I don't think it was a lack of games that killed it. I think it was the combination of the lack of a good music chip (The POKEY chip was awesome on the 8 bit line of computers), and the idiocy of Jack Tramiel. If the system was released when it was supposed to (before the NES) with a better chip set and a better controller, the third party games would have been there.

I think those years between 1983 and 1985 when the industry was dead was a big misfortune in general.
There was stuff going on, but everything was pretty much obscure. It was basically like some kind of dark age apostasy.
Well I wasn't born yet when that happened, but I hear people say that's how it was. That wouldn't have happened in today's world.
Whatever Sega, Namco, Capcom, Nintendo, Konami, SNK, and Taito were coming out with was enough to hold the industry, but everything was hidden overseas until Super Mario shipped.

Actually this thread isn't about why the console failed but more about what games it should of got. i just mentioned the failure because of the short life span is the reason why we didn't get more games for it.
I just wanted your opinions on what games you would of liked to see for the system.

I just wanted your opinions on what games you would of liked to see for the system. Honestly, I think every Nintendo 3rd party game would have come out for it if it weren't for the failures. I posted a video years ago about how some games on the 7800 by 3rd party developers actually looked a bit better. As for games, the system sorely lacked games that weren't based off of strategy or RPGs. I think ports of the Atari 800XL library and the Atari ST library would have been awesome. The computer 8 bit line of games was outstanding! Those would have easily been brought over to the system. The 7800 was sorely lacking RPGs. The ST had greats like the Ultima sequels, Dungeon Master, and even Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. I know that system was 16 bit, but I believe ports would have worked out in the end. The 7800 even had a Laser Disc add on adapter, so the popular Dragon's Layer and Space Ace could have been there.
Oh the possibilities. It is really amazing how bad Jack Tramiel messed things up.

Nintendo had revolutionised gaming by jumping from point based games into cinematic adventures. But In retrospect the 7800 is a arcade system that didn't even have the arcade games the hardware was built for. I'm glad the 7800 was taking the idea of the 2600 into the next step by bringing arcades games that were more faithful to the arcades and adding the 7800 touch like a 2 player mode in centipede. But my main problem with it was that it didn't even do that. There was only a hand full of arcade ports released for the system and most of the non arcade games were not even worth owning. I would of adored the 7800 if it got more arcade games such as frenzy, Joust 2, Millipede and sequels to the 2600 games like Yars revenge 2 and break out 3. As it is now the best thing about the 7800 is the backwards compatibility with the 2600. And the port Joust is one of my favourite ports of the game. |

This is the legacy of the 7800, it's a 2600 that can also play some other games. |

Although I agree with you on that for the 7800, I kind of disagree with you on that for Atari as a whole. They had more than arcade ports, but they only put those on the computer systems. The game lineup for the computers is phenomenal. I think Jack Tramiel came in with the Commodore mindset, and he completely missed the evolving market. People wanted the "all in one" computer system (Good God, remember the failure of the ADAM?), since the dedicated console market was failing to continue to be considered innovative. I think he missed the mark, because most of those 8 bit systems were sold as computers with the industry secret that parents were being duped into purchasing a gaming system with the option to print. Even Nintendo pretended to be an "entertainment system" for a couple of years. Once the NES became popular, they ditched that scam and started to advertise a video game system like they truly should have. (I never knew a kid who had a R.O.B. The Robot) Tramiel was more or less interested in creating the Commodore 64 2.0 with the Atari ST. The 7800 was shelved for that very purpose and eventually released as a liquidation piece. It really sucks, because Warner Bros. was really going to hype this system up as an amazing leap forward with a nod to the past. Anyways, Wikipedia has a list of 624 games for that system. I wonder if Tramiel thought that the future of money making was in hardware instead of software? There are a lot of non Atari games there. Boy was he wrong.

Oh I didn't know that. I'm mostly familiar with Atari in terms of consoles. I've never been into PC games, not even now. They really weren't PCs, if you ask me. They were pretenders at the time. I'd love to get a hold of an ST or an 800XL (or the mythical XEGS), but they were not nearly as popular in the US as they were in Europe. Maybe you or one of our other European friends will have a better chance than myself. |

It is hard to believe that this video 6 years old. To me, this is considered new CGR. Our forum is pretty old now. I even forgot our anniversary. It's been five years since Mark stopped making CGR on YouTube, pretty insane. |
