Lots of people prefer this one than the sequel, and from a movie perspective I may understand why.
The lore of Mortal Kombat was much more colourful on the second one, and that was something people tend to distant themselves from, because of insecurities I believe.
However from a fan perspective I like both equally, and for the second one, I was actually much more excited because I was a little older, and I was a bigger fan by then.
Having Highlander himself in this first one probably makes it the better movie. Although I can't stress enough how great it is for me the cast of the second movie too. Those guys, do give justice to the original characters in so many ways.
Obviously, the dream would have been to have the actual in game actors playing the movies too, but that was probably too much of a task for them. Although I do believe that with the right direction it would have been possible.
I was very disappointed with the mini series which they call Legacy. I honestly think it killed the magic that these movies had.
It is a different generation, and they probably just don't get it, but for me at least, Legacy ruined any hopes of having a proper sequel to these magical movies I loved so much as a kid.
From a movie stand point I give both a solid 5. But from a fan perspective they were 10 to me, specially the second one, which is when my fandom was through the roof.

Oh man, I remember walking to the theater with my brother to watch this movie. When the lights went dark and the theme started to play, you'd think we'd died and went to heaven. Everything about this movie was awesome. Of course, I have my nostalgia glasses on from my younger days, so I really don't want to go back and see it again to see its flaws. Side note: I know it is a sin to say this, but this happened to me with Tommy Boy. I can't stand the movie now. I can't undo what has been done.

I need to watch this. I love the franchise, but video game movies tend to be bad. So it's intriguing that this movie is one of the best in the genre. It's on the US Netflix, so I'll watch one day soon.

I can relate, on the second movie for example, my aunt took us with my brother, and he didn't want to miss a thing, but at some point he needed to pee, so my aunt hold for him the soda cup so he can pee on the soda cup, and that way he didn't miss a thing. These movies were really pumped up, the fight scenes were something to look forward, and the techno made them some much better. 2 Unlimited was one of the most successful bands on the planet, and it matched perfectly the Mortal Kombat vibe: The nostalgic Mortal Kombat theme everyone cries about came from that song, and it was a massive hit too: This one is cool ^^^ because it has scenes from both movies, and even the TV show.

Only thing I don't like about this movie is how they did Sonya dirty. She was practically a non-factor the whole movie, kind of a waste considering how much screen time she had. Otherwise it's everything you could ask for from a Mortal Kombat movie. Raiden was definitely my favorite character in this flick.

Raiden was the shit, dude is Highlander, you can't go wrong with highlander. I think the Sonya thing was just because of the times. No body from Special Forces was a big deal back then. I recall that in the second movie, spoiler alert: Johnny gets killed right at the beginning if I remember correctly I'm guilty of this, all I cared for were the Asian characters, and the Ninjas. I think that's why I couldn't get into Legends because there was no more of that Ninja focus anymore. Nowadays Special Forces are a big deal, they are some of the most powerful characters, and they are the ones that light up, and spice up, make more interesting, the story modes. In MK11 I found myself always looking forward for the Johnny Cage and Sonya scenes because they give some of the most Hollywood movie vibe. Ironically, even though they are some of the most funny ones, they are the ones that take a lot of the cheesiness away too.

Yeah, I think I have seen similar reviews. Like I said, lots of people hated the sequel, but it was people who were fans of MK1, which were the first MK fans
UMK3 players like me were fascinated with the second one. I honestly like the second movie more than the first. It goes well with the franchise, and I started with MKII myself.
Like if you don't know the characters you are not going to get the most of it, being familiar with the characters and playing with them, and then seeing them on film is what makes the experience.
Those guys probably didn't even know who Kabal was, or Syndel, or Striker, or Nightwolf. They are used to the old Shang Tsung, so it all looks different for them. They simply won't get it because it is not the MK they are familiar with.
I am familiar with all Mortal Kombat, so that's why I can enjoy them both. To me it is more Mortal Kombat, not another Mortal Kombat.
Also another important element is that for some people MK characters are cheesy, the ninja costumes are cheesy, and they just see it that way.
For fans they are actually the opposite of cheesy, they are just cool, the colourful ninja costumes were the shit for me, like beyond cool and amazing. I used to draw them and make some kind of comic stories on a notebook.
So the second movie is more Ninjas, you have Scorpion, and Sub-Zero, but you also have Ermac, and Rain, and then the cyber ninjas, like Sektor, and Cyrax, plus Smoke was always my favorite, so it is so much ninja stuff, and seeing it in live action on the big screen, with fighting, and music, it was like one of the most amazing things you have ever seen.

I've rewatched both MK movies in the last couple years and the first movie is entertaining but can't say I thought it was amazing like back in the day. I loved the movie so much as a kid and hated Annihilation. Now I still think Annihilation is a bad movie but don't hate it like I did back then. I would agree with strato that I wish Scorpion and Subzero got more screen time in the first movie. Best video game movie...? It was a web series converted into a movie but my favorite is Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist. Mortal Kombat is definitely up there though, probably number 2 for me with Detective Pikachu rounding out the top three. And I love Street Fighter with Van Damme but that's more enjoyable for how bad it is. XD (while I really enjoy both it says more about the state of video game movie adaptations that these are top tier)

I remember the live action tv show actually not being that bad. I just remember it existed at some point. I need to look it up. I always wanted to watch it. They used to show it at night, so I didn't get to see it because I didn't have my own TV yet.
