Haven't seen it in years but I remember thinking it was the best war movie ever made. That intro was incredibly realistic to what an actual battlefield looks like in the heat of action. The atmosphere was great all the way through and had some very touching moments.
Although some have come close such as Hacksaw ridge, I still can't think of any war movie that's better than Saving Private Ryan. And we also got the amazing Meddle of Honour frontline from this.

This might be the greatest war movie of all time. Spielberg created something incredible and profound here. That opening scene is breathtaking and is praised by veterans for capturing the spirit of the D-day landing. The film is solid as hell all the way through as it has lots of great set pieces and thought-provoking moments such as the Nazi soldier capture and the private who fails to reinforce his squad. Amazing movie and is one for the history books. To think that this movie lost to Shakespeare in Love for Best Picture at The Academy Awards is a disgrace.

Because Harvey Weinstein is/was corrupt as heck.

www.thenationalnews.com/arts-culture/the-world-according-to-oliver-stone-1.387910I think Oliver Stone summed it up best when he said: "...in Saving Private Ryan, you saw the worship of World War II as the good war. America loves war, America depends on war, and so does its industry." -Oliver Stone Couldn't agree more. Hollywood is all about glamorizing warfare, gun violence, and american patriotism. Spielberg is a piece of shit and this movie is just propaganda in my eyes, just like another war film also written by Robert Rodat: The Patriot. This is also one of the reasons I've had a recent change of heart about the Star Wars franchise. That's always how I've always interpreted Saving Private Ryan and most other such american war dramas.

I'm pretty anti war myself but when watching these War movies I think people are put off by war and would rather be anywhere else but on the battlefield. I would say these movies are less about promoting war and more about telling the emotional story of experiences of the people involved in war. And Oliver Stone could talk considering he directed Platoon ,Born on the Fourth of July and Alexander also writing the script for Scar Face. talking about war and gun violence.

Stone is just jealous that his war movies didn't become as sensational as Spielberg's. For a guy who made Platoon, he should really shut the fuck up when talking about profiting of war.

I was going to say the same thing. Doesn't make sense for him to say what he did when he does a great job of portraying war and violence.

Yeah, there's a lot of blatant violence in Platoon, and the same goes Saving Private Ryan, but both are anti-war movies for sure. I mean, how can you watch that opening sequence and not be mortified by the the utter destruction of humanity? Platoon is a fantastic movie, but Saving Private Ryan takes it to the next level for sure.

He is genuine, smart, and articulate, but there is something off. He is quick to belt out "conspiracy theories" about corporation/American military industrial complex/etc, but then gives guys like Castro and Chavez a pass.
As for the utter destruction of humanity, look at it this way. There are those among us that when the ramp drops, they charge forward. That is the best part of humanity.

I have never seen Platoon, but I have seen enough of Spielberg's work to know with confidence that he is an overrated, ignorant piece of shit.

He has made some mediocre movies for sure, but never forget that he directed countless of classics that has and will stand the test of time like Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Schindler's List and this movie.

The first time I saw this movie I gave it like 9.6 because it is such a technical masterpiece. I don't think there is anything left for me to say about this movie. I agree with all the good things you said about it. Watching pictures of D-Day after the movie makes you appreciate the significance of those images. The new 4K version with HDR and Atmos is definitely recommended as this has some of the best audio mixes out there, and simply watching the entire spectacle is exceptional as well.
