Awesome, yeah this is a 9.5 movie for me.
What makes it splendid is the incredible writing. There are so many excellent quotes worth cracking up from time to time with close friends, like:
- “What's wrong with this fucking country? Everybody hates everybody!”
- “You just can't trust a guy who acts like he's got nothing to lose.”
- “Why is the last patient of the day always the hardest? // Because you're tired and you don't give a shit. It's not super-natural.”
- “One of us had to die. With me, it tends to be the other guy.”
- “Marriage is an important part of getting ahead: let's people know you're not a homo. Married guy seems more stable. People see the ring, they think at least somebody can stand the son of a bitch. Ladies see the ring, they know immediately you must have some cash or your cock must work.”
- “Pride comes before the fall.”
- “Do you lie? // Why? Do you? Honesty is not synonymous with truth.”
- “A man makes his own way. No one gives it to you. You have to take it.”
- “There are guys you can hit and there's guys you can't.”
- “Just because you play a tough guy, doesn't mean you are one.”
- “I'm going fucking nuts, man. I can't be someone else every fuckin' day. // Calm down. Most people in the world do it every day.”
- "I thought you were supposed to go into shock! [after being shot in the knee] // I'm not in shock! It fuckin' hurts!"
- “My theory on Feds is that they're like mushrooms, feed 'em shit and keep 'em in the dark.”
- "This is America: You don't make money, you're a fuckin' douche bag!"
- "What's the matter, smartass, don't know any fuckin' Shakespeare?"
- “What we generally do in this country is one guy brings the items and the other guy pays him. No tickee, no laundry.”
- "When I was your age, they would say you could become cops or criminals. Today what I'm saying to you is this: "When facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?"
- “Do you trust him? // Well, these days, who's reliable?”
- "Do you like little Miss Freud sucking on your cock? // Yes, yes, I do."
- "Lennon said, "I'm an artist. You give me a fuckin'ing tuba, I'll get you something out of it." The point I'm making with John Lennon is: a man could look at anything, and make something out of it. For instance, I look at you and I think "What could I use you for?"
And my personal favorite:
- “I'm concerned about a Chinaman who thinks it's wise to come to a business transaction with automatic weapons. None of us are carrying automatic weapons. Because here, in this country, it don't add inches to your dick. You get a life sentence for it.”
Sometimes I just randomly say to people "in this country" and have a laugh with that. The movie is simply great.

This is one of the greatest gangster movies ever made, and it's my second favorite movie from Scorsese behind Casino. I've watched it three times and it's as entertaining the 3rd time as it was the first time around. There are so many great characters here and when this film even has a good performance from Marky Mark, you know it's something special. A little known fact is that this movie is a remake of a Hong Kong production called Infernal Affairs. It pretty much follows all the same plot points except for the ending, however, The Departed has so great dialogue and reimagines the characters in such a way that it completely eclipses the original movie. One of the greats for sure. 5/5

The ending to this is one of the best ever.

I didn't know about the Hong Kong movie, now I need to look for that, I love Hong Kong movies. Thanks for that info.
And yeah, the ending was quite special, the first time I watched the movie I wasn't expecting that kind of outcome.

I haven't actually seen them. Infernal Affairs is worth watching in my opinion but I agree with Balder that The Departed is a better movie, not something I can about a lot of remakes...especially movies remade in another country. I am down for a rewatch of The Departed, haven't seen it in years. I think I have it.

The ending of the original movie is different from The Departed, so I always thought they were sequels. Have you watched any of them?
