Almost forgot to comment on this discussion. Everyone knows this as the worst original Star Trek movie, but honestly it isn't as bad as I expected it to be. This is my review from when I watched it in May:
"The worst of the original Star Trek movies and the movie that confirmed that the even numbered movies were the best. This is a movie that failed because of many factors, the most important of which was the low budget and the other being the writers' strike, both of which cursed the film. Despite being such a whacky premise, I actually find it quite enjoyable and fun that Spock's half brother is trying to find God at the center of the galaxy, that aside though, there are some glaring missteps that ultimately drags the movie down. The effects, while not awful, are way too ambitious for its own good. The film comes off as kind of cheap at times in that regard. The character interactions are not that strong and since the cast was getting old at this point, there are some weird scenes such as the Uhura dance scene and Kirk climbing a big ass mountain like he is Stallone from Cliffhanger. The Klingons are a weird addition as they definitely feel like a tacked on last minute villain. Sybok is an interesting character, but his arch is way too predictable. Despite many missteps, there some genuinely great scenes such as the Row, Row, Row Your Both scene; heartwarming and wholesome Star Trek greatness. The perfect theme from The Motion Picture is also a highly welcome return. Uneven, but not bad." 2.5/5
