So I'm wondering if I'm going to buy a Nintendo 3DS. My friends are getting one to play Pokemon, and it would be awesome to join in. Since I know very little about Nintendo handhelds, I would be pleased to be persuaded by you guys. So why is it worth getting into 3DS? What are some of it's best features? Which model to get; The 2DS, 3DS, 3DS XL or the "New" 3DS?

New 3DS XL just because it will have SNES 3D remakes, it also has exclusive new realeases, plus it plays all the 3DS, 2DS, and DS games. DS has the biggest gaming dedicated system device consumer base in history, so there you go. It also has 3D head tracking which is nice. Plus it comes with a built in Amiibo reader that my regular 3DS XL can only get separate. On top of that it's the only one of all that it is easily modded because of the internal parts placement to install the cable to play your games on your regular TV, which they still look good on it because of the extra power.

Can you mod the New 3DS to play on a big screen, huh? Do you have to screw up the 3DS for this to work? Which must mean it avoids the warranty if I get it brand new.

I've bought a 3DS recently (the New one) and I'm very pleased with it. My main point of appreciation is actually the backwards compatibility: the DS library is huge and is (IMO) the best library any portable ever had; as the 3DS library itself is no slough either, you are getting two awesome libraries in a single portable. To give an example, this is the exact list of games that convinced me to buy it; it isn't a list of best games, but just the games that interest me the most (usually for being entries in series that I really like):
(DS) Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin Mega Man Zero Collection Ghost Trick Chrono Trigger Okamiden Mega Man ZX Mega Man ZX Advent Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Zelda: Spirit Tracks Ni no Kuni
(3DS) Liberation Maiden Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D Kid Icarus: Uprising Sonic Generations Sega 3d Classics Hyrule Warriors Legends
I've already bought some of these and I'm very satisfied. The portable itself has a great built quality and the controls have a good feeling; the screens are very crisp and the stylus works better than I imagined.
About the recommended model, most people think the regular 3DS is good enough; I got a New one because it was in a sale for an equivalent price. What you need to know is that a few new games will run better on the New (like Hyrule Warriors Legends, which adds more characters on screen and runs at a higher and more stable framerate), but I only know of one game that is completely exclusive to it (Xenoblade). So, you won't lose much by getting the regular one, but if you find the New for an equivalent price, you should go for it.

Yes Balder you can mod it, and yes you need to screw it, so it will avoid the warranty. But as far as I know it only works on the new one.

So the New 3DS is the one to get, at least when I look at prices in the used market; they are priced about the same. Trying to convince a seller to sell it to me for 115 USD. I'll see how it goes. Very good recommendations Cervantes. stratogustav I'll look into that mod.

As others have mentioned, the DS library is huge, and the 3DS is near the end of its life cycle so you can pick and chose from many, many titles both used and new. I've owned several models, so I'll go over a few different things.
I'll mention whether the units support amiibo or not, or if they have any right analog support, though neither of these features are heavily used in the library.
2DS The most basic model. No 3D at all, and mono sound (though stereo available through the headphone). The whole thing is a single wedge, rather than the clamshell design the other models use. This makes it more durable in some ways (no hinge to break) and less durable in others (nothing to protect the screens). This is the cheapest version to buy, whether used or new. Battery life is comparable to the original 3DS.
- No Amiibo/NFC support without an external device - No options for right analog or zr/lr buttons
3DS Similar features to the 2DS, but I would point out that these models have great stereo sound, particularly when compared with the older DS models. (When I first got mine, I was blown away by how much better Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia sounded).
We have the traditional clamshell design and a decent stylus included. The 3D is the first gen and is serviceable, though I only only used it intermittently if a game made use of it (like some of the puzzles in Super Mario 3D Land).
Battery life is not great, with about 3-5 hours per charge, but recharges pretty quickly.
- No amiibo/NF support without an external device - Circle Pad Pro accessory adds right analog, and zr/zl buttons, along with a more contoured grip
3DS XL Larger than the 3DS, obviously. Screens are larger, but resolution is the same. Battery life is longer than the earlier models. 3D is of similar quality.
I found the speaker quality to be not quite as nice as on the earlier and later models, but it wasn't a deal-breaker.
Probably the most comfortable stylus of the group.
Better battery life than the earlier models.
I find it a bit uncomfortable for more intense games. For example, I can only play one GP in Mario Kart 7 without my hand hurting. That said, the Circle Pad Pro XL gives a more comfortable grip.
Attractive matte finish
- No amiibo/NF support without an external device
- Circle Pad Pro XL accessory adds right analog, and zr/zl buttons, along with a more contoured grip
New 3DS (I haven't actually owned one of these, but my understanding is that they are comparable to the New XL units, but smaller)
New 3DS XL
Comparable in size to the older XL, along with similar battery life.
The stylus is a bit stubby, but certainly usable.
Best sound quality of the various units I've used.
Unfortunate glossy finish
3D features head-tracking so you can play more naturally while using it. I'm more inclined to leave the 3D on with this unit, though not turned up to max.
Front loading cartridge slot has seemed less prone to popping out when in a case or pocket in standby mode.
Features improved load time for menus, and one exclusive game (Xenoblade Chronicles X).
Uses micro SD cards rather than SD cards.
Built-in NFC/amiibo support.
Right analog-nub and built-in zr/zl buttons. (These are handy, but are significantly less comfortable than the various circle pad pro accessories, and there isn't one available for the N3DSXL)
--------------------- They all have strengths and drawbacks. I like the New 3DS XL most overall, but there is a case to be made for many of the models, and I know many people who swear by the regular XL with Circle Pad Pro.
I know the ability to have the 3DS moded for play on television or PC has been mentioned. I should note that this is available for most, if not all of the different models, though is not particularly cheap.

I like the 3ds and its library. I just dont think I have touched the system since I got my vita. I actually prefer the vita over the 3ds despite its lack of support by Sony. I was hoping it would have some more variety in its library but thats fine I guess since there's always imports. I think both are stellar systems I just like the vita more.
I actually like the gameboy, gameboy color, and gameboy advance libraries a bit more then the ds library.
No ds game has ever made my as happy as having persona 3 portable and persona 4 golden on one system.

Well im sorry you feel that way about it Balder but that is your opinion. I have my reasons for preferring the vita over the 3ds. I'm just tired of what nintendo is offering nowadays and I wanted a different handheld experience and I got it. To be honest I haven't enjoyed a nintendo handheld since the end of the gameboy advance era. After nintendo came out with a different direction in there handheld line it was never quite the same for me. I was sad when they shifted over to something different. The only games I ever had for my ds were pokemon games and that was pretty much it with a few other games of course. Now that I look back I didn't really enjoy the ds that much. I loved my gameboy advance Sp however. I took that thing with me everywhere I went it was my baby. I loved using link cables with my friends and playing games with them. That to me is something wireless gaming can't replace.

About the Vita/3DS thing: if you are a fan of jRPGs, I do think the Vita is the way to go, especially considering the PSP library, which was the king of jRPGs. One thing that almost makes me want a Vita is the Ys series - I have all the games that were released on Steam, but the newer ones were PSP/Vita exclusives, and I really love the series.
