This month, we're starting Halloween week. No wait, reverse that. After smuggling ourselves past bio-security, we find ourselves in Seoul faced with a bigger bio threat than the Wu Flu. From Not-Japanese director Bong Joon Ho, before there was a Parasite, there was... Like many other people, I went back to watch some of Bong Joon-ho's other mvoies after having watched Parasite, and The Host did not impress me all that much. Still, it fares a lot better than a lot of other monster horror movies out there. I watched it almost exactly one year ago to the day (October 11th). Here's my review from then:
"Bong Joon-ho made a gigantic splash with Parasite worldwide, but before that, he also made a huge splash at least in South Korea with The Host. The Host is a monster movie that shares a lot of tropes with the disaster genre, but Bong has some tricks up his sleeves that keeps The Host from being a generic piece of shit. The characters and cast are surprisingly good, nothing super amazing or anything, but I honestly felt that they were solid through and through. It also helps that the main character is played by the dad from Parasite, who is a great actor. The Host as a monster movie however, is not the greatest. We get to see the monster from the start and quite clearly. I would not say that the CGI sucks, but it looks dated by today's standards. Had the monster been more hidden throughout, it would have been a much more forgivable experience, but as it stands now, the CGI takes me out of the film. The story is not unique either since it is riddled with boring tropes. It is an alright movie by all means, but it is not like this is anything special." 3/5

I saw this movie around a decade ago so I don't remember much about it. I'd agree with Balder that it was pretty average.

Parasite is the only movie I have seen from him, and I really enjoyed that one, so I'm open to see all his other movies as well.

Great movie, one of my few modern favorites. Haven't seen it in a couple of years, but I've watched it many times and always loved it. It's due time to watch it again, I just gotta find where I put it.
