It's been over 10 years since I played it but I liked Killzone Liberation. If I recall the game was fairly difficult and I got stuck on a late mission and never beat it.

KZ:L, it's pretty dope BUT
Aiming is not as "analog". If you're positioned at the wrong angle from the target, your shot will go straight by. It's a pain with bosses. I've noticed this with Alien Syndrome as well. Lucky for me, my primary wep there is a flamethrower.
The damage is mildly infuriating. I see a bullet take off 80% of a target's health and it compels me to use something less powerful, like a fist, to save my more powerful shots. You can only hold one gun at a time.

This is another game I wanted to play when it came out. If I get a Vita this will definitely be one of the titles for the system I will want to beat all the way to the end.

As good as Liberation is, PSP had proven itself as a FPS capable system. With excellent games like Coded Arms and Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex shooting down any doubts (pun intended), there was no question about PSP's ability to do the Killzone name justice. In fact, we expected greatness and were very eagerly awaiting Killzone to deliver the best handheld shooter of all time, showing everyone what the PSP was truly capable of when a first party title got to strut it's stuff! So when Liberation was revealed to not only be a top-down shooter, but also focusing more on tactics and squad management than adrenaline pumping action, it was disappointing. I still downloaded the demo and gave it a chance, and while it was at least a great game in it's own right and I ended up buying the full game, it definitely wasn't the portable Killzone we and the PSP deserved.
Mercenary on the other hand has made my jaw drop more than any other game. It was the realization of a game I'd given up hope daring to keep wishing for. Insanely impressive and a showpiece of true excellence all across the board, a fantastic game in every way and easily one of the top best games of all time. Liberation is great and arguably a must have for PSP, but Mercenary is by far the better of the two and arguably the single most compelling argument why Vita is a must own system, at least for fans of Killzone and any first person shooter enthusiast.

This might piss off Killzone fans, but here goes my opinion on the series:
The only Killzone game I got around to playing was Killzone 2 on the PS3, and I hated it so much that I swore I would boycott the series for the rest of my life. It combined everything I hate about modern FPS games and console FPS games into one, single, smelly dropping: cinematic-style gameplay, slow gameplay, linear level design, monochromatic color scheme (AKA another "grey and brown" shooter from the "grey and brown" era of AAA games from the 7th gen), no split-screen support (although it did at least have LAN and bots, so I'll give it that much credit), dumbass, machismo dude-bro protagonists, a generic, forgettable storyline, lack of replay value due to the linear level design, and probably numerous other complaints that I can't even begin to remember at the moment.
I absolutely hated the game, I'll just leave it at that. It's possibly my single most hated FPS I've ever played, and this is coming from someone who got some enjoyment out of infamous, half-baked abandonware jank like Pariah and budget-barrel titles like Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green. The only area of Killzone 2 that I even remotely like was the multiplayer, but even that didn't hold my attention for long, since there were plenty of other excellent PS3 exclusive multiplayer shooters to choose from around that time period, two of which were already in my possession: MAG and Warhawk. Therefore I had no reason to keep playing Killzone 2 online, despite a handful of decent maps and an acceptable arsenal of weapons.
I'm sure that Mercenary is as technically mind-blowing as gamers have claimed (the screenshots you posted look amazingly good), and although I've always been tempted to try the first Killzone on PS2, I have decided that I will not play them or any other Killzone games because of how low my expectations are based on my dreadful experiences with 2.
