Put up a re-review for one of my go-to titles on the system, 3D Galaxy Force II:
In the process, I discovered some interesting things I wasn't previously aware of regarding the original game and its rich history. For instance, I never realized that the original Galaxy Force was essentially the same game with minor alterations.
There are some other interesting footnotes that make this game of interest but the big question is whether it's right for you and that's a hard one to answer. I think in 2013 when it first hit the eshop, it really wowed 3DS gamers and arcade fans for demonstrating the potential of the console and revitalizing arcade games but I'm afraid most are inclined to forget or turn the other cheek to the game.
It's something of a conundrum really due to the fact that the game lacks a certain definitive character but makes up for it in style via sounds and visuals as well as being a rails shooter. Personally, I like the quick action and variety and as someone who gets overwhelmed by sheer length of modern games, 3DGFII is really a refresher.
I recommend it strongly but if you're on the fence, at least consider the Sega 3D Classics Collection it's featured on.

I distinctly remember the gameplay footage (but not the title) from one of Karnage's reviews (which wasn't too kind to the game after looking it up now that I do know the title). I'd always thought the style and concept very intriguing & kewl depite the review and never actually having played it meself. At least now I have a solid name to attach to it. If the MD/Gen version sucks, the PS2 or Sat version might still just be me cup o' tea. Thanks for the awesome history lesson! The Sat version looks amazing btw. The best looking version of them all imo. Not too spensive on eBay either, making it a likely addition to me Saturn collection somewhere down the line. Did MJ really have the arcade machine for this?...

I remembered checking out that Karnage review after bawesomeburf posted one of the first community video reviews on the old site for the 3DS version. Needless to say, I was taken aback some kind of 16-bittish rails shooter existed on the console and snagged it at the nearest opportunity. What I was surprised by in the game was as you put it the 'kewl' style. The planetary environments are lush and varied to make each planet charismatic while the tunnel segments have this old-school throwback (dare I say Zaxxon) kind of feel to them. When you play a sprite perfect rendition of GFII, it has this authentic feel to it. A shame more of the home ports weren't kind to the original game but it's also nice to see the Mega Drive wasn't the worst offender. One of the best cases to be made for getting the Saturn or PS2 version is the ability to experience the game on a television monitor with the surreal sounds and images (that OST is heavily groove-infused). The flipside is that I don't know the extent to which the home consoles allow customization for fuel quantity thereby making them harder games to complete, but as most of Sega fans will testify, the difficulty makes the game worth coming back to (plus the stage selection aught to keep things fresh). According to Wiki, "Michael Jackson owned a deluxe cabinet of Galaxy Force II which was auctioned off following his death." A quick Google search shows several brand name gaming sites (i.e. Kotaku, Siliconera) verify this claim. Could you imagine owning one of these?! (reduce volume for shrill noise)

The quality of the gameplay footage is very good. It must be complicated to get it that good from a handheld device without a video output signal. It looks nice. Thanks for sharing, may the Galaxy Force be with you as well.

Thanks strato! My trick is using the 3DS stand that came bundled in with Kid Icarus Uprising and with most of these 3D Classics, you can save a replay thus saving me from moving the console all over the place. The upgrade in camera certainly helps too.

Great video, mate! Coincidentally, I started delving into the Sega 3D Classics collection last month, and GF2 is certainly my favourite. It's really one of the best uses of 3d on the 3DS, and you're right in saying it puts other games to shame - especially since I think the 3d in GF2 enhances not just the graphics, but the gameplay itself.
But man, is this game hard! I haven't finished yet; I think I can only complete 3 stages tops before dying.

Thanks Cervantes! I'm glad to hear Galaxy Force resonates strongly with you. The setting you're playing on is probably more arcade authentic but I recommend setting the fuel level to max for more of a joy ride!

My good friend musicmaniac1965 just did a demo run for the Saturn version and offered some commentary comparing it to the one on the 3DS. He's a little biased toward 3DS as am I but it's good commentary and display of the capabilities on the Saturn. Personally, I prefer the arcade textures to the PS2-Neo version he's referencing but both are commendable. All interested parties would do well to check out his video!
