I've only ever played Unreal Championship. Not sure how different it was gameplay-wise from the first Unreal.
MAY 2019 EDIT: Ugh, how could I be so stupid? I not only meant to say UT 2003 on PC instead of UT Championship (there are differences), but I also somehow forgot to mention that I spent a ton of time with the first Unreal Tournament on PC on my first Windows XP computer.

Okay, I'll give you all my take: The original Unreal was ahead of its time. I loved that you had an alternate fire and that the weapons tried to be different. I loved the flak cannon. Primary was a big shotgun blast and secondary was a shrapnel bomb. The 8-Ball Gun was actually a RPG lancher, straight ahead or bounced like a grenade.
The enemies were actually smart. If you fire at a skaarj, he'll dodge and not just take it like a tank. Also, the first enemies you meet FIRE ROCKETS! That's pretty hardcore.
There are no end of level tallies like in Quake or Doom, so you're bound to keep going and going and going...and you will be if oyu don't read the clues. It's easy to get lost and go in circles.
The ending was a "To Be Continued", which sets the stage for the Return to Na Pali expansions.

I'm actually in the middle of another playthrough of Unreal (although I've only been playing it on and off) but I've been playing some more Unreal Tournament lately.
