I don't agree with Armored Core Raven on this, but man, does he pull some funny analogies! I find it really hard to discuss a series as big as this, so I do agree that it's overwhelming to take an entire series on these discussions - unless it's a series with three games tops, and even then may be too much. My opinion on the Zelda 2d series is entirely different from the 3d one; the portable entries are different enough from the console games to be judged on their own terms; the post-Wind Waker games have a very different feel from the previous ones, and now, the pair Link Between Worlds / Breath of the Wild are, again, creating a new style for the series. Last, some entries are so different from the series itself that they can only be judged alone (Zelda II and Majora's Mask), and I'm not even counting the spin-offs (Hyrule Warriors, Crossbow training, Four Swords Adventures and that Tingle game). But my general opinion on everything is: this series has a reason to be so iconic, it has more good games than bad ones and some of them are just legendary (LoZ, Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and now, apparently, Breath of the Wild). Even the bad ones are still very well made and thought of (like the DS entries), so even the bad Zelda games don't have the bugs/glitches you would find in a Bethesda release (Elder Scrolls, Fallout) or in a Sonic game. I even dare to say that, at least for the main series, there are no bad games - at worst, you'll find "not inspired", average ones. Yep, even Phantom Hourglass: it's one of the less inspired, but it's still very well made. I couldn't even finish Twilight Princess since it was so boring, but I still recognize that the game itself was not really badly made, it was just too average. My favourite Zelda game, though, is Link's Awakening DX. It's one of the few times that Nintendo went for an original story and a serious/depressing tone (I see Majora's Mask as its successor in this regard). LA doesn't have Ganon, the Triforce or even the Princess Zelda, and is all the better for it. The only connection with the main series is Link himself (which is barely a character anyway...) and the general top-down 2d gameplay style; besides that, it's pretty much its own thing. Too bad that, being a GB and GBC release, only a few people have played it. This game also had a very understated influence over Ocarina of Time: it's here that we see for the first time minigames like fishing, sidequests were you trade stuff, an active use for the shield, the owl that gives you advice and some characters (like Tarin and Marin, that became Talon and Malon in OoT).

CervantesYou just made me remember that I actually have a Link's Awakening DX cartridge sitting at home. It came with the Gameboy I got off of ebay a few years ago, but I didn't think much of it since I wasn't really in the mood for playing Zelda at the time, I should try it out someday. I've also heard good things about the oracle of seasons/ages games but I haven't played those myself either.

Nintendo is the Justin Bieber of gaming and The Legend of Zelda in like one of his most popular "albums" or whatever popstars release these days. That's actually not true. Simply because what I mentioned before. Zelda games don't usually sell very well. They sell good, but just OK for a series that stablished, I think even Uncharted sells better. Justin Bieber is a pop artist that doesn't review well, it is not critically acclaimed, and it is never considered a masterpiece in music composition. That position would go to other games. I don't think there is an equivallent to Justin Biever in the gaming industry. The closest thing I can think of is something like Minecraft, but no because I heard Minecraft is actually creative.

Man, there are more complaints in this thread that it's too broad than it's discussion.

Zelda is more like Chuck Berry. It may not be as fast or flashy as the new titles, but give the games some credit. They created the mechanics that make today's games possible. That would mean Hydlide is Louis Jordan. However you have to consider that they raised the standard more than once. The first time was with the NES classic, but later they did it again with Ocarina Of Time, and it seems they are doing it again with Breath Of The Wild. Which means that under your analogy, if this was the 70s, they would be Chuck Berry, but also The Beatles, and then Led Zeppelin. But no, because The Beatles sell too well to compare it. I think music is not the right way to go. Zelda is like Harry Potter. I don't like Harry Potter though, but I would say it would be the equivalent. They are critically well received, they have a strong base, they sell well, but they are just not Furious 7.

There is no video game counterpart to The Beatles.

There is no video game counterpart to The Beatles. Yeah, I don't think there is. Maybe Mario is the closest. I would also add that I heard that technically we are still on the 64 bit era of games, Sega CD exclusives like Night Trap are getting released for PS4 and Xbox One, Disney is dating sequels for Frozen and The Lion King for 2019, and it is likely that Heath Ledger never comitted suicide and was actually murdered.

First off, I want to start by saying that I agree 100% with Armored Core Raven's statement that the series is overrated, because it really, really is, especially the newer games. I'm sick and tired of critics constantly cock sucking the series, because IMO less than 5% of the titles are worthy of receiving a 9/10 rating or higher.
I'm giving the series an "average" rating. The Legend of Zelda series suffers from the same problem that has plagued the Elder Scrolls series since Morrowind; utter bankruptcy of imagination, except in Zelda's case it's far more severe of a problem. For example, there are only two games in the entire Zelda series that don't take place in Hyrule (Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening). At least in the Elder Scrolls series, every game has taken place in a completely new setting. LoZ also tends to rehash the same creatures, enemies and villain (Ganon) time and time again. This has been a problem literally since the series began back in '87 or so. It's unacceptable.
As for the games themselves, the only two I love are Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask; the former for its serious narrative, great gameplay and first rate art direction, and the latter because it's Majora's Mask. Zelda II and Link's Awakening are the only other two that I like. As for the others, the 2D games all play the same to me (all top-down perspective 2D games do) and the 3D games other than OoT and Majora's Mask are either atrocious (Wind Waker) unfun to play (Skyward Sword) boring (Twilight Princess) or I haven't played it (Breath of the Wild).
I have particular contempt for Wind Waker. It came out right after the two legendary N64 games that revolutionized the series by stepping up the art direction. Then Wind Waker came, which looked like an absolute joke designed by a 5 year old, and was so heavily reliant on style in its art direction which made it look as crude as any crappy cartoon that I've seen. In addition to the laughable art direction, Wind Waker is also boring to play, easy as all hell, overly long, casualized, and forgettable. Miyamoto is a complete moron and hack for letting the series sink this low.
But as terrible as games like Wind Waker are, I still consider the series' best games, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, to be among the best games I've ever played. Majora's Mask I have particular admiration for, namely for its extremely imaginative and fresh setting, even though I find OoT funner to play. They're both masterpieces as far as I'm concerned. Zelda II was also a great game for stepping up the gameplay, graphics and challenge level. And even though I don't play it, I still respect Link's Awakening.
On the whole though, the series is just average at best, and highly overrated with so much squandered potential.

Just for the record Zelda was sucking MY c*ck while I was praising Wind Waker, and Justin Bieber watched while Chuck Berry tinkled on him.
Keep making them, I say. Can't all be classics. If you had told me Final Fantasy would be up to number 15 (and then some) a few decades ago I would say it's amazing the series lasted that long. Can't please everyone and you can't expect what you love about a series to stay true for decades.
People should feel fortunate the 2D and 3D series has lasted, and there's even spinoff stuff like Hyrule Warriors and multiplayer games.
