So in order to enjoy a game you need to purposely limit your own use of game features and even make sure you're using sub-optimal equipment. That's what happens when your game is for all ages. You have to make the little kids feel empowered too. This goes along with that discussion we were having about difficulty levels. Zelda would greatly benefit by either deciding which is its audience or at least including different difficulties from the get go. But this is a Nintendo thing, building most of their games for as many audiences as possible, at least since the N64 days. I can only recall a single Nintendo developed game with different difficulties from the outset: Kid Icarus Uprising, which is a challenging game. There are any others?

This is my biggest beef with Nintendo games from the past 15-20 years, they're way too casualized. FZero GX was hard as hell and had multiple difficulty levels, but that was developed by Sega so I'm not sure if it counts.

Great series. I love A Link to the Past, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Link's Awakening, Wind Waker, and Breath of the Wild.

I'd love to see them consistently change their ways, but the diehard fanbase actively returns them equally positive feedback both for their achievements and fuckups, so Ninty can't really tell if they are doing something wrong if they are.

spidershinobi It isn't just the fans giving these games high marks. Look at Breath of the Wild or Mario Kart 8 on the Switch.

If people give both Breath of the Wild and Wind Waker similar amounts of praise it makes every single person at Nintendo think they're just as good.

Wind Waker wasn't quite as universally praised, but I see your point. In the end, though, I think sales numbers will be Nintendo's greatest motivator and I would bet BotW will out sell WW.

Looking back at this discussion thread, the only reason it was fun and I don't regret suggesting we talk about the series as a whole is because we got to discuss individual LoZ games afterwards. I'm so glad we did! I just want to make it clear that it was never my intention to only discuss Zelda as a franchise and not delve into the specific titles; I just wanted to know what the pub thought of the franchise overall.
This is also why I am in favor of remakes, remasters, and expansions getting separate discussions from the original game. It's totally possible for a great game to get a terrible remake, a terrible remaster, and/or a terrible stand alone expansion, so why the hell SHOULDN'T we separate those things?? Besides, life just isn't fun when you can't talk about the finer details.

You know maybe that can let you give Balder a break. If he ever makes an entire series thread, we can always make new threads for each game individually, and have the best of both worlds.
