They tried it once, let's just say it didn't work out. What happened?

Epic had a better idea in terms of offering modders some financial reward. Basically they would offer the more skilled mod creators jobs at Epic. This not only keeps mods free, but it's also a good way of finding skilled workers who have experience using Epic's engine. That and the mod creators would make more money (in the form of a relatively stable income no less) instead of feeding off the scraps of their own paid mods after Valve and Bethesda took their sizable slice of the profits. I don't know if Epic still does this, but they did back when people made mods using Unreal Engine 2.

winnersdontusedrugs - Hiring modders was also Valve's entire business: Counter Strike begun as a mod, as Team Fortress, Day of Defeat, Alien Swarm and even DOTA, while they also hired other developers from some particularly amazing mods (like the creator of Minerva: Metastasis, the HL2 mod). Too bad Valve doesn't release many games nowadays, so we don't see anything new from all these creators anymore.

Cervantes I knew Valve remade those mods and sold them as standalone games, but I didn't know they actually hired the modders, that's interesting.

Shit happened. A brief summary: Going by what the video said, it seems as though Valve at least learned their lesson, but apparently Bethesda is going forward with this bullshit and hasn't learned anything. If I were into modern gaming, I would boycott ALL Bethesda products until they stopped this bullcrap. Probably is just going to backfire on them anyways, though, like it did with Valve. Say, that reminds me of a similar incident. Do you remember hearing about Nintendo removing that SSB Brawl mod Project M from the web? Why do companies not understand that modding is perfectly legal? I mean, removing the Metroid 2 remake was a fairly understandable (albeit cold-hearted) decision, since that wasn't simply a mod, but to take action against a mod for a 2001 game is just preposterous beyond imagination.

I think paid mods should be a thing. Where's my pay?

I'm sorry to inform you that your pay has been cut due to poor performance. Thank you for understanding. What has it been cut down from? Our annual wages here at the Pub start at one nickel. Your compensation is now 20% less, or four pennies. As soon as you have earned enough to cover postage, I'll be happy to mail that to you at my next convenience. Thank you.

Found this today. The poster did a good job highlighting the problems with Bethesda's Creation Club, and included some tweets made from their VP of public relations that highlights the flaws in it all. Makes me hate Bethesda even more.
