Film Discussion of the Week: Tombstone

I told you scipioafricanus that there was a very high probability that I'd watch this movie this week. Here's my review of it:

"One of the better Westerns from the modern era. Tombstone does not have the best plot or storyline, and it definitely suffers a bit from being based upon a real story in that the pacing gets all funky at times, but the casting here is just perfect. I have never been a fan of Val Kilmer. As an actor, he has always struck me as either mediocre or subpar, but Tombstone convinced me, the dude is fantastic in this movie. This is not to shy away from the rest of the cast, which are also great. I mean we have Kurt Russell, Sam Elliot and even Charlton Heston makes an appearance. I think this is the strongest quality in this movie. They all deliver their one-liners perfectly and it makes for some very funny moments. The action is also great I must say. There were some shootouts that were very engaging. Where this movie falls a little bit short for me is that there are some subplots I really did not care for like the romance subplot. I know it must be there because it is based upon a true story, but it sometimes ruins the pacing for me. Also it feels a little bit too Hollywoody at times. It is no Spaghetti Western, that is for sure. But regardless, this is one Western to watch." 4/5

This movie definitely convinced me that Val Kilmer is more than you're average actor, and Kurt Russell is generally a better actor than Jeff Bridges. Still, Bridges has a better performance in The Big Lebowski than any of Kurt Russell's movies, but Russell is better overall. Very fun movie man.
