Trust me, CE was the most revolutionary one (I can go into detail later). Bungie made all Halo games up to Halo 4 (except Halo Wars, which was done by Ensemble), Reach being their last masterpiece. All major Halo games since Halo 4 has been made by 343 Industries. I don't know about that. We are talking about the first major shooting game on consoles with online multiplayer from what you described. Just because the game that came later may be better, it doesn't mean much, it sounds like Halo 2 is the revolutionary one. CE re-defined the FPS genre with rechargable health, two weapons, control scheme and most (and most importantly teabagging) etc. Halo 2 simply improved upon an already existing system and added online play.

Thanks for the clarification. I think you just showed me Halo 2 is the one revolutionary. Nothing is more significant than online multiplayer on consoles for a shooter. Now that said, I'm super curious what makes Bungie so special. I've seen Destiny's marketing, and I still don't know what people see there. I know it has to be something fantastic because their PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 player base had always been huge, and so many people cannot be wrong, or they at least see something there not easily noticeable at first glance.

Pretty much all FPS games after CE follows its formula, that's way more significant. Any game could have become an online game, but not every game could have made the standard for how a FPS should be played.

I agree that any other shooter could have introduced online multiplayer on consoles, but if you said it was Halo 2, then it just happens that Halo 2 was the one revolutionary. There may had been online games before as well, but probably not as commercially significant. The gameplay mechanics for shooters change from game to game, sure there are similarities between many commercial shooting games, but not all can say they introduced online multiplayer to consoles. Online multiplayer is the most significant change consoles have experienced, more than DLC, micro transactions, etc.. It is what separates classic gaming from modern gaming. The next revolution would be when physical copies dissapear on retail stores. That would define a new era in the industry. But as of right now it is online multiplayer what has caused a change in everything.

But as of right now it is online multiplayer what has caused a change in everything. Actually Balder is right. Aside from online multiplayer, Halo CE had a much bigger influence on console shooters than Halo 2 did. Sure Halo 2 sold better and had online, but CE revolutionized multiplayer for console shooters with its inclusion of both splitscreen and LAN play, and also streamlined many gameplay elements that all prior shooters did poorly, namely cycling through weapons; in Halo you can only carry two at a time, which eliminates the tedious chore of scrolling through a long (often very long) list of weapons in search for the right one, like in Goldeneye 64 and Turok. It was also one of the first console shooters to feature seamless transition from 1st person perspective to 3rd person perspective when you enter a vehicle, as well as one of the first to have heavy emphasis on vehicular play/travel. Halo 2 in many ways is just the same game gameplay-wise, and none of the introduced gameplay elements in 2 (like dual wielding) were new to the console FPS scene.

its inclusion of both splitscreen and LAN play, OK, those two are definitely big, I will now consider CE also a revolutionary game. Online multiplayer is still more relevant though.

Even my absolute worst experiences with local multiplayer have been at least as good as my better experiences with online play. Plus, online always dies away at some point; local play is forever.

Halo 5 will at some point just fucking die. It doesn't have splitscreen or LAN play. It has to be online, which means at sone point you can't play with anyone else. At least Halo 6 is getting splitscreen back.

In my opinion, local play will always be superior to online. Of course, the same with me. I didn't say it was a good revolution, and Balder further backs up my point with his comment on Halo 5. The two more significant introductions of CE are now gone. But online multiplayer is here to stay. Sadly They may bring those back someday, but Halo 5 is proof of their lack of value next to online multiplayer. Because even when we all know local multiplayer is and will always be superior, the changes of introducing online multiplayer, have transformed the console experience forever.

Convenience over quality as always been the name of the game. Most people stream music and movies even though physical is superior in quality.
