These kind: (on left) I was in awe when I first saw one in real life. I immediately fell in madly love with them for how sexy, glossy and thick they are (they're literally like an inch & 1/2 thick). It's a shame they're so fragile just like the smaller PS1 jewel cases. Often when I bought a Saturn game on Ebay it would arrive at my house with a cracked or broken case. I still think they're an improvement over the PS1 jewel case design though, at least in terms of durability. I wonder why the Japanese Saturn cases looked like standard jewel cases while these didn't? I mean, what was the official reason for making the western case designs so huge and boxy? Anyway, what do you think of them?

They're awesome. They allow for big nice cover art and detailed screenshots and description of the game on the back, a big nice high quality instruction manual and multiple discs for games that need them without any storage space related problems.

The Western Saturn cases look cool, but are extremely impractical. They break way too easily and take up a lot of space.

WTF I had one but it disappeared for some reason. I'll try to find another one soon. Sorry about that. EDIT: Fixed, new picture added. You're welcome.

Most CD cases from that time period were extremely brittle, it wasn't just the Saturn's. I agree the Sat. cases took up too much space (I can't imagine owning a large collection), but they're just so god damn phat that I love them regardless.

I've never seen a Saturn game in real life. That's how rare these things are.

I do prefer the japanese jewel cases; see, besides the american ones being so easily broken (a lot of my US saturn games have broken cases because I bought then used) and taking so much shelf space, they also come with inferior cover images and black & white manuals. They're just unpractical.

I like that the size made it feel like buying something special. If I'm spending fifty bucks on a game, I want a big ass case, dammit!
On the other hand, as has already been mentioned, they were brittle as hell. A lot of my cases have been damaged from just general wear and tear. I wish they switched to the cardboard big boxes like Sony did in the early PlayStation days.
And what really chaps my ass is Sega never figured that out. They are the same cases they used for Sega CD games. Those early games had to have had there cases falling apart by the time the Saturn came out.

I like them but they aren't practical and break easier than other CD/DVD cases.

...they also come with inferior cover images and black & white manuals. That is totally true. I can't think of a single instance where the western box art for a saturn game looked better than the japanese box art.

Working Designs' US Saturn games had some pretty nice box art. Other than that, most US Saturn games had really freaking generic box art.

I've never seen a Saturn game in real life. That's how rare these things are. How often do you visit retro media stores? There's a place in our capital city that sells games for just about every system (in addition to movies & music CDs + records). I've seen many saturn games there, and even working 3DOs and Virtual Boys for sale. You just have to look in the right places.

By capital city, I meant my state's capital, not the country's. But shops like these are not uncommon in cities nor smaller towns. Just check around or look in a phone book and you're bound to find at least one in your area.
