If you disagree, then offer a rebuttal. I do disagree. And I will write a rebuttal. But I must warn you, my sources are entirely American. Because my sources are me. GTA IV was fun for a while, but quickly became kinda boring, to be blunt. On paper, there's nothing really wrong with it, but when you're playing it, especially after the story is over, it just isn't very fun. Every level or mission or whatever can basically be boiled down to: drive way over there, shoot those guys, now drive back. Granted, that's the definition of games like these, but I never felt as bored in Vice City, or other Rockstar games like Red Dead Redemption. Liberty City feels like an empty shell of a town. Bowling is not fun, drinking is not fun, being called on your cell phone every other minute by characters that you don't like to go bowling or drinking is not fun. Besides running people over or shooting cops, there's nothing to do. And that gets old after 5 minutes. Compare that to the Street Crimes in L.A.NOIRE or the whole list of activities and random events in RDR. On top of that, the setting is depressingly drab and dreary. How many shades of brown and gray can you get in one palette? Play GTA IV to find out! It makes for an environment not worth exploring. I clocked countless hours into the two games mentioned above, just wandering around. Never could force myself to do so in IV. Older GTA games like VC had a kind of sense of humor to them. IV and Five both felt like they tried to have a more serious story... and failed, imo. The main characters are one dimensional. The plot is contrived. And unfortunately, it isn't even funny. I remember being happy with the cover based shooting system, but now all games do that. So there's no reason today to put the disc in the tray. Does that sound like a 98% score to you? That's my gripe with almost all open world games. They become incredibly stale after a while. RDR's random events are so empty after the first cycle. When you finally figure out that you just do the same thing when the store clerk gets robbed for the n-th time, it simply becomes a chore to me. The only open world game that I felt never got stale because it was empty was Fallout 3. It's so full of unique stuff. Whenever I hear that a new game is open world, I almost lose all interest. It means the game contain boring collectibles for me to waste hours on collecting through online guides. And side missions that all boil into the same objectives: Follow that guy, protect this thing, kill those generic enemies etc. We need to games to stop becoming empty open worlds.

I beg to differ on, well, just about everything you said quite frankly. -I enjoyed GTA IV's story more than San Andreas's. The main characters are not one dimensional. They're ORIGINAL, and the premise is a breath of fresh air compared to the derivitive plots Vice City and San Andreas had. -I enjoyed GTA IV's missions, though I wasn't crazy about them (SA's missions were generally funner) -The game got even funner for me once I finished the campaign, because then I didn't have to worry about the stupid phone always bugging me in the middle of my wild crime sprees (that was one of the game's few annoyances for me) -The setting is supposed to be dreary. It's a REALISTIC CITY. I don't play GTA games for lively natural environments. San Andrea's map was definitely more interesting and bigger, obviously, but I thought that much more care and detail was put into IV's world. Have you ever considered partaking in creative activities like this? : Can you do that in San Andreas? Vice City? 5?? NO, you can't! If IV had come packaged with LAN support and had better cheats it would've been just about perfect.

I beg to differ on, well, just about everything you said quite frankly. Write a rebuttal or it didn't happen. You're only fooling yourself when you say IV's story was original. Comrade Vladimir (or whatever his name was) was presented as a character trying to turn a new page on life, but nothing in the story or his character ever made that even the tiniest bit believable or entertaining. It's like Rockstar put zero effort into the story and then fluffed it up with hopes you wouldn't notice. They did the same for Five, a game I just finished. Which one in particular did you like? The one where you drove across town to pick up the package, or the one where you drove across town to kill that guy and his friends? Funner is not a word. So you prefer your games to have no atmosphere. OK. That is one of the dullest things I've ever seen. Only made it to the 30 second mark. I can't believe the video is 16 minutes long.

I actually like open world games. Some of my favorite games are open world. Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid - all open worlds. I don't expect a game to be played forever without becoming boring, but when you create this big world for the story to take place in, you gotta make it fun. That's all I'm saying. Liberty City in IV never felt fun to me. It was just empty space disguised as a city, a bunch of pixels between where I was and where the action was happening. So, RDR. I don't expect the random events to be fun after five times. I appreciated them only as a short distraction from the main story. Example. You finish a mission and you're in the motel in Armadillo when you hear some bandits riding through town. So you shoot them, and the NPCs love you, and you ride down across the border for the next chapter. Along the way you hunt some deer and sell the hides to the merchant when you arrive. It all felt natural and right. I don't pop RDR into my PS3 just to ride around the "sandbox." But when I played or replayed the story, that open world was funner than the story alone might have been. That should be the goal of a open world game.

It has to be the most boring open world I've ever seen, and it's massive. Empty, but massive as fuck.

The first 3 games were very popular, just like Smash 64, I think when Melee finally came out they were still popular.

Dan is so obviously blinded by nostalgia that it's beyond pitiful. *sigh* There's absolutely nothing wrong with not liking a game, but this guy can't even give credit when & where it's due. Shame. Oh, and for the record, GTA IV's airport is one of my all time favorite locations in the whole series. It kicks the hell out of San Andreas's airports.

Dan is so obviously blinded by nostalgia that it's beyond pitiful. Nostalgia for what, exactly? I'm comparing IV to other games by the same developer for the same generation. I did give it credit. I said I thought the switch to cover-based combat in IV was an improvement over previous games. But just so we're clear: this is a debate and I'm an asshole. You don't debate someone like me and expect them to bring up your points for you, do you? So far, you haven't laid out anything that I should give the game credit for other than the ability to push NPCs off an overpass. You say, "The characters are ORIGINAL," but you don't say why. Give me an example of how Vladimir was original and maybe I'll agree. You say, "The game was funner after the story," but don't give examples of what made the game fun. I don't think the game is terrible. I played through the story, after all. All I'm saying is, a 98% metacritic score is too high. Why? Because IV doesn't let you fly the planes like in the other games?

Because IV doesn't let you fly the planes like in the other games? -It's nostalgia and it's bad for you. Now quit snorting it through a straw! -A 98% for GTA IV is a bit high, but nothing outrageous. Meanwhile, 1st party Nintendo games from the same time period were getting near-perfect scores left and right (like SSB Brawl for example) despite the fact that the gameplay of these games was severely downgraded compared to its predecessors (in the case of Brawl, "severely" is an understatement). GTA IV did not play worse than the previous GTA games. -GTA IV's airport was amazing. Massive in size, ramps and vehicles everywhere, pedestrians running about, planes circling the lot, rooftops to camp out on....it was legendary for a virtual airport, and amazingly fun in the game's multiplayer mode. The ones in SA didn't feel anywhere near as spectacular or fun to play around in.
