Guys, I've got some serious questions that I need to know answers to. In a nutshell, I want to play games, namely Far Cry, that are incompatible with 64 bit architecture and/or or Windows 10. I've tried installing fanmade patches to get this game to run on Windows 10, but no luck. This leads me to some questions that I've been dying to ask:
1: Is it possible (and, if so, practical) to downgrade from 64 bit to 32 bit? (this seems to be the problem with Far Cry)
2: How do I go about acquiring an older OS like Windows XP, 7, or 8? Is it available for free download or would I have to pay for it?
Please respond.

1. No 32-bit program is incompatible with a 64-bit version of Windows (only the inverse is true); you should always go with the 64-bit version. In Far Cry's case, the 64-bit patch exists to make it run even better on Windows x64, but it should run anyway. Your problem is an incompatibility with Windows 10, Far Cry being a 2004 release made for Windows XP. From what I've read online, it runs on W10. There are some instructions on this forum. And you can find any necessary patches on PC Gaming Wiki. Also, remember to try running the game in compatibility mode (right click, properties, compatibility; choose Windows XP SP3). 2. It's not available for free, unless you count piracy. Online, I've seen people selling it on Ebay.

Cervantes Thanks. I think it's absolutely idiotic beyond comprehension that the older Windows OS aren't available for download anywhere, even if it isn't for free. Makes my piss boil. If older games can get a digital distribution, then why can't operating systems? It makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Cervantes My only guess is it's Microsoft's way of encouraging people to support their newest OS version. But that still doesn't make sense considering they'd probably be making MORE money by selling their old OS. I mean, if they're not selling it, than it's people on Ebay and Craig's List who are making the money by selling it.

Actually there is a 120-day trial version of Windows XP available as a downloadable image file from Microsoft's homepage, it's called POSReady 2009 and it's designed for use in point-of-service devices, but as far as I've heard it's still mostly just regular old Windows XP if you wish to use it as such.
A friend of mine gave me the tip on this version a while back as he's been using it for years and I was telling him how I'd like to have Windows XP again some day and I was worried I wouldn't be able to find a copy as in stores they only ever have the latest Windows for sale, sadly, and I don't feel very secure buying operating systems from ebay or the like, for obvious reasons.

Spirit Bomb - In your case, I would just suggest getting the game on GOG. It's much less hassle than looking for a legit XP copy, to be honest. And also cheaper. GOG games usually come very well patched to work on modern systems.

Are you afraid you're going to get scammed, or something like that? Cervantes That's definitely a good bit of advice. I know for sure that if I ever decide to buy Crysis again, I'll get it from GOG.

Yes, the scams are far too common for my taste on auction sites, but specifically with PC software like operating systems you never know if it's a fake version with some malicious code hacked into it, like if you buy a Windows version it can have some worm or trojan packaged in with it so they can get your personal info like credit card and bank codes for example, you sadly never know and personally I don't want to risk it regardless of how small the risk is in general, it can happen and I don't want to be part of the tiny percentage it happens to.

Wow, that IS a scary thought, indeed. Not sure if l still want to go through with my plans to procure a copy of Windows 7 on Ebay after reading this...

Cervantes I reinstalled Far Cry today, cluelessly attempted to install the patch several times, fiddled with every compatibility mode setting, and still couldn't get it to run, even once. The main problem with this ordeal is that the page that hosts the download links for this mod HAS NO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO INSTALL IT!!! I mean, WTF?? Even sites like Nexus are usually courteous enough to include instructions on how to install specific mods. What's worse, I even checked youtube for a tutorial on how to make Far Cry work for Windows 10 and there were none. I'm at the end of my rope with this bloody project, but I'll keep scouring the net for answers, as time-consuming as that is. Sorry for summoning you, I just HAD to vent. I hope you'll understand.

Spirit Bomb - That sucks, it's really awful when you can't get a game to work. Especially since Far Cry is a fun game. What I think is: Far Cry was released in a time in which retail sales for PC were in steady decline, so, years later, most people practically forgot about the retail copy - that's why you aren't finding many instructions on how to solve this.

It's so lame. Do you think a GOG copy of Far Cry would need these patches in order to work?
