Spirit Bomb I have Resident Evil on GameCube but I can't in all honesty call it a remake when it changes as much as it does, in my eyes it's a full on reboot. I hate it for the most part, the only things I liked about it at all were the detail and animation upgrades of the pre-rendered backgrounds, the acceptably upgraded 3D detail, the dynamic (if still only stencil-based) shadows and the fact it now has vibration feedback in the controller (sadly only very simple vibration feedback due to how poorly and outdated the GameCube controller design was at the time, but still a step up from no vibration at all). I really hate everything else about the game, they ruined all the classic dialog, I didn't get any enjoyment out of the rewritten script and story at all, pretty much all changes were terrible, the new areas and other stuff they added was uninteresting padding for me (I only somewhat enjoyed the backstory of the girl who became a tyrant-type monster, but the execution of her in the game was still not good and I would've enjoyed it more had it just been a secret file you could find to add context to the situation, maybe a little pre-rendered animation showing a shadowy figure of her could've been cool too if handled correctly with enough subtlety), I strongly miss every single thing they removed or changed to be different from the original, the crimson zombies especially broke the gameplay entirely for me, forcing me to avoid those sweet headshots I loved so much to execute in the original, and the bosses are now mostly just FMV QTEs rather than proper in-game encounters with actual gameplay, again taking away some of my favorite parts of the original. All this added up to a very disappointing experience for me and I've only ever played through it once with each character, both playthroughs were equally awful. Thankfully Resident Evil 0 Zero fixed pretty much all those problems and is one of my favorite GameCube games.

Is this thread about the series as a whole or just the first game? Someone needs to specify, either Balder or Dan E. Kool. If there's no "series" attached, it means only the first game. So in this case only the first one.

The reason I asked is because I've heard many people call the REmake the best Resident Evil game ever made, but I've never played it myself (nor the original), so that made me curious. Would you say it was scarier than the original?

Would you say it was scarier than the original? The original was much scarier for me personally, I was a lot younger when I played it and it was the first legit horror game I had ever played, so most of the concepts of a scary game were still new at the time in the videogame industry, at least on that level of execution (there were some Alone in the Dark games and some other more obscure stuff but they never took off in popularity and I hadn't played or heard of them yet). When I later played Resident Evil on GameCube it wasn't scary at all and the fact they made so much stuff more cinematic and less gameplay-focused made it even less scary as I felt more like I was watching a movie than playing one, for the most part I was just bored and annoyed at everything they had changed/ruined. However, for anyone playing either for the first time these days I'm guessing Resident Evil on GameCube is the one that is more likely to be scary, especially for modern gamers who've been raised on HD quality graphics. The less technically advanced visuals of the original game generally doesn't affect gamers the same way nowadays, they almost look comical now and the B-movie dialog is arguably more funny than scary, so it's a lot more up to the person playing and how good they are at getting their mind involved with older games that determines if they'll be able to find the original Resident Evil scary anymore.

Talking about REmake here. REmake is a masterpiece of game design and atmosphere. From the moment you set sail to the Arklay mountains, the atmosphere sets in, but once you set foot in the mansion, the horror begins. What can i say about the atmosphere of the Mansion other than 'fear of the unknown' and 'great design' with incredible lighting and fantastic mix of puzzles, mansion design and tactical encounters due to low ammunition is some of the finest crafts of the gaming industry imo. This is a game that puts the player experience first, you experience it at your own pace, with your rules and instinct. Advancing more and more into the mansion gets dangerous the deeper you delve, therein lies the strength of Resident evil, in giving the player a choice in how to maneuver the dangers.
Personally, it has been awhile since i played REmake, but i can safely say it is one of my favorite games of all time, while i agree the direction after RE4 wasn't favorable, RE5 has the Mercenaries mode which is very addicting. I know that RE6 has destroyed the franchise in many people's eyes, but i urge you to try Resident Evil 7, its a series redemption unlike any other with the most horrifying villains the series has ever brought.

When it comes to scare factor in games, I'm definitely on the same boat as you. Outdated graphics don't phase me and I still find games like Ocarina of Time (certain parts of it anyway) just as terrifying today as I did back then. I've seen gameplay footage of Resident Evil 2 on PS1 and it looks much scarier than RE 4. *On an unrelated note, do you really hate the gamecube controller?? D:

I think I agree with your opinion more. You seem to have a good understanding of the series.

Well, you're in the wrong place, watching a pretty good gaming video. god the clickbait with that kind of channels on youtube is sickening. Basically, RE7 is a cosmetic change in the series when compared to RE1 and 2, but when compared to RE4 and 6, its a core change, and a fantastic one. I was playing this morning and i honestly felt scared playing it, thats a feeling that hasn't occurred to me since RE3, back in 2002.

Perhaps you're right, though i replay REmake on yearly basis, so i guess the replay value for me is high, even though REmake has no Mercenaries mode. I've not finished RE7 yet so i wouldn't know tbh. However, RE5 is possibly my most played game this year, about 200 hours in Mercenaries mode alone, so the replay value for me is high because the gameplay is fun and addicting.

All this added up to a very disappointing experience for me and I've only ever played through it once with each character, both playthroughs were equally awful. Thankfully Resident Evil 0 Zero fixed pretty much all those problems and is one of my favorite GameCube games. This post is one of the best explanations as to how much remakes can differ from their original game and why the pub is way better off discussing one game at a time per week. Lookin back, at least this discussion wasn't mutilated by Balder by lumping the original game together with its remake. I doubt Raven would've even voted if that were the case.
