Great article! It's easy to overdo stories like these (as is made obvious by the sequels). Carpenter kept it clean and simple with the original and that's what makes it a classic.

I finally found some time to watch Halloween, and it rules. Here's my thoughts on the movie:
"I have seen so many of the sequels and remakes that it is a shame that I have never really watched the original. I have seen many of reviews of it so I knew what I was getting into, or at least I thought so. Because the thing about the original Halloween is that it is much different from its sequels in many ways. For one thing is that it is actually original, and god damn is it iconic. Everything from the most haunting theme of all time to the white mask, jumpsuit and knife. Halloween starts of so cool with a POV shot of the killer carving his origin story. Michael Myers and Dr. Loomis are great characters, almost like a Dracula and Van Helsing. They complement each other so well. Halloween is definitely a slow paced movie even though it is only 90 minutes, and even though it is not for everyone, I think it is masterfully assembled with some fantastic cinematography that I have never seen in any of the sequels. One shot I loved in particular is where Myers is hiding in a dark closet in the background and his mask slowly becomes visible as he exits the closet. All of the stalker scenes build all of suspense, and this surprised me a lot that the film just drops Myers straight into the action in a way. Overall I think the movie has some fantastic suspenseful scenes and kill scenes that just nails this as one of the best horror movies of all time. The ending in particular is what pulled it over the edge for me. It is one of my favorite endings of all time and it is up there with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for being the best ending in a horror movie. Spoiler: The way the camera cuts back to see that Myers is gone and then the theme kicks in and the camera cuts to all the locations Myers has been to; truly haunting indeed, masterful." 5/5

Huh, it seems I hadn't commented on it yet! See, I love John Carpenter's movies. While Halloween is not my favourite one (it's The Thing, then Prince of Darkness, then In the Mouth of Madness, then Big Trouble in Little China, then...), it's an early film that sets most of his style. There's a very creative use of shadows, meticulous camera movements, wide shots that help to hide Michael Myers in plain sight and a very haunting score by Carpenter himself (as usual). Donald Pleasence is great as Loomis, and as Balder said, he is set out to be a character in the style of Van Helsing, which works exceptionally well. I also agree with the ending being just perfect in how it's open and suggests that Myers is an inhuman force of evil. Although it's not my Carpenter's favorite, it's still a 5/5 to me.

The latest Halloween movie is a direct sequel to this, and it is going to continue with two more movies.
