I just love the work done by Capcom in the Mega Man NES series.

Dan E. Kool - I love how Nintendo made an effort to keep this sound effect consistent throughout the entire series, it's just so iconic!

The Bomberman series always did a fantastic job all around when it came to the audio, sound effects and all. The Half Life series has great audio design as well.
Not as venerable, but I still love the hell out of Smash 64's "clanky/smashy" sound effects whenever you hit someone (which are only present in the PAL/NTSC versions; the japanese version has really weak & generic effects).
The Elder Scrolls games usually do a great job with sound effects. I still play Oblivion regularly and the SFX are always pleasing to the ear, though I've heard reviews complain about Morrowind's audio design.

Red Dead Redemption is great for sound. So true. The wild life. The sound of horse hooves on packed dirt. The sound of horse hooves on wooden planks. The sound of horse hooves on paved roads! The sound of horse hooves on the corpses of my enemies... Lots of modern games have really fantastic sound effects that create an amazing sense of immersion. The new Star Wars Battlefront game was amazing. But they don't generally have the kind of iconic, unique sounds that old games have. Everyone knows the Wakka Wakka Wakka of Pac-Man or the sound of Mario jumping and getting a coin. Those kinds of sounds are the best in my book.

Spirit Bomb - I think remember every single sound effect from the Half-Life series. Valve did a pretty good work on that series' sounds, especially from 2 onwards. The radio chatter between the enemies, the boxes breaking, the running sound, the helicopters approaching, getting a life supply... Man, these are all engraved in my mind.

I always thought Mirror's Edge and Devil May Cry 3 had good sound design. And of course, who could forget: youtu.be/5V5Auxa1Ra4Spirit Bomb That's funny, the first thing I thought of when someone asks about videogame SFX is Smash 64. It has some of the most recognizable and endearing sound effects out of any game I've played.

Most stuff from the second gen have absolutely the best bad ass sound effects in video game history hands down.
Like that beginning of Asteroids that sounds like the score from Shark by John Williams or the iconic intro tune of Pac-Man followed by his moving eating sound as he travels through the maze.
Defender, Berzerk, Frenzy, Gravitar, Joust Laser Gates, Yar's Revenge, Stargate, Scramble, Tempest, Space Duel, Star Castle, Super Cobra, Gryruss, Exerion, Galaxian, Robotron 2084, and the list goes on, nothing competes with all that awesomeness.
Just check the sounds of the infamous Polybious restored by its own makers. You simply can't beat that.
