I thought of this after one of us admitted to having never played a Catslevania game in another thread. I think we've all been there at some point. "What, you've never played Such 'n Such?!" There's a lot of games out there, a lot of excellent games, but just not enough time (or money) to play them all. So why don't we make a list of the absolute essentials? A list of games that every person must actually play (not watch on YouTube!) to have a solid grasp on the history of our hobby.
This list will be the absolute best, the most significant, and the most important games that have been made, according to the Pub. Let's try to keep it to one per franchise, or two if the franchise evolved substantially. For example, the original Legend of Zelda would be the most important of the 2D Zeldas, the one everyone should play, but Ocarina of Time could also make the list to represent the 3D Zeldas.
If you disagree with a pick someone above you made, try to come up with a similar title that you think is more worthy of being on the list, rather than just saying it's no good.
My first pick will be for Pac Man, in honor of the end of Pac Man Week.
What about you?

Street Fighter 2. I'm not a very big fan of it, but it's sure fun from time to time. And it might as well the best gateway fighting game.

I really don't think there's a game that everyone should play. I'm more of an advocate only playing the games that catch your interest personally. It's not like someone can never end up liking a game that doesn't interest them at first glance, but I don't think someone owes it to themselves to play a particular game just because it's important, or innovative for it's time, etc. None of those qualities by themselves mean someone's going to enjoy playing it, and there's also probably alternatives similar to said games that people might enjoy more.
That's just my opinion though, I'm not trying to derail or even disparage this thread in any way. I think it's cool that we can have a thread where we can recommend some of our favorite games to eachother.

There are too many essentials it is impossible to choose. Space Invaders, BreakOut, Snake, Pac-Man, Tetris, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., Mega Man, Castlevania, Contra, Zelda, you just can't.
Some of the best lists are those of the NES Classic and the SNES Classic and even those are incomplete.
You need Out Run, Super Hang-On, Space Harrier, After Burner II, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop, Crazy Taxy, Space Channel 5 Part 2, Daytona USA, Sega Rally 2, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Wolfenstein, Quake, Duke Nukem, Armored Core, Ace Combat, The House Of The Dead, Time Crisis, Silent Scope, etc....
This is the thing. You can make an argument saying OK you can only choose one, either Virtua Fighter or Tekken, but the reality is that yes Virtua Fighter is the 3D fighter creator, but if you enconter someone and ask them, have you played Tekken? And they say no, you know there is something wrong there. So you really can't choose, you choose Virtua Cop and Time Crisis, not just one. You choose Grand Theft Auto III, or San Andreas, or Vice City, but Crazy Taxy and Shenmue are also important.

If I was to make a list of "essentials", I wouldn't exactly list the games I think that are the best, but the ones that became more influential - so, by playing them, you would understand better how video games evolved in the past decades. So, for example, as much as I love Ninja Gaiden, I think I would actually recommend Devil May Cry 3 instead for someone who wanted to understand the rise of spetacle fighters, as it became the most famous and copied one.
Considering how the "metroidvania" genre is everywhere nowadays, I would recommend that everyone play both Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night.
For FPS games, I would say DOOM and Half-Life 2 represent very well the raycaster, labyrinthine level-design games of the 90s and the 3d, linear and story-focused games of the 2000s.
Ocarina of Time was really a turning point for 3d action-adventure games, so I agree with it being on any list.
Chrono Trigger and FF7 represent very well the transition from 2d, concise RPGs to the long animations and bloated stories of 3d RPGs.
Mega Man 2 is still a constant reference for 2d action games and to a particular style of pixel art, so I would also recommend that.
Portal was also a huge influence, and in the following years there were all these games based on test environments and "for science!" plots.
Dark Souls is another one, since in any conversation about a hard game there's always the risk of someone saying "This game is the Dark Souls of... [insert any random genre here: platformers, rpgs, racing, dating sims etc.]"
So yeah, my entire list would be boring and composed of a few famous games in each genre, even if I don't think those games are exactly the best ones (I dislike FF7, prefer MM3 over 2, Ninja Gaiden over DMC3 etc.). But if someone is just starting to play video games and don't want to feel lost in most conversations, those are the most referenced ones.
Also, Pac-Man goes without saying. How many Pac-Man clones were made in the 80s? I have no idea.

If we are heading that way then it gets easier. In no particular order:
- Space Invaders - Breakout or Pong - Asteroids - Snake - Defender or Scramble - Joust - Tempest - Battlezone - Pole Position - Robotron 2084 - Pac-Man - Frogger - Dig Dug - River Raid - Pitfall! - Donkey Kong - Super Mario Bros. - Super Mario Bros. 3 - Tetris - Diablo - Doom - GoldenEye - Street Fighter II - Virtua Fighter 2 - Virtua Cop - Gran Turismo 2 - Symphony Of The Night - The Legend Of Zelda - Ocarina Of Time - Breath Of The Wild - Super Mario 64 - Contra - Mega Man 2 - Double Dragon - Tecmo Super Bowl - Bejeweled - Wii Sports - Duck Hunt - Space Harrier or After Burner II - Minecraft - Dance Dance Revolution - Guitar Hero - Metal Gear Solid - Tomb Raider - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater - Super Smash Bros. Melee - Mario Kart 64 - Mario Party 2 - Resident Evil - Resident Evil 4 - Resident Evil VII [VR] - WipEout - Out Run or Super Hang-On - Shenmue - Crazy Taxi - Grand Theft Auto III - Herzog Zwei - Command & Conquer - Sim City - Sig Meier's Civilization - DoDonPachi - Super Metroid - Chrono Trigger - Final Fantasy VII - Portal - Half-Life 2 - Temple Run - World Of Warcraft - Pokémon Yellow or Gold - Halo 2 or 3 - Dynasty Warriors 2 or 3
I would say Devil May Cry 1 [definitely 1 over 3, or over Lament Of Innocence, or over God Of War, or over the Ninja Gaiden reboot]
Also playing Lament Of Innocence on @crazy is exactly as playing Dark Souls 1, but I would still consider Dark Souls 1 over it because the hard difficulty came as a default and made a real change.

Yes, that's what I was trying to convey. This exactly. Great list, stratogustav, but I'd argue for Pokemon Red/Blue over Yellow or Gold/Silver. Gold and Silver are better games, but I think everyone needs to play the first, the most basic, to see how the series has progressed.

Gold and Silver are better games, but I think everyone needs to play the first, the most basic, to see how the series has progressed. Thanks man, and I see your point about Pokémon, but if we go in that direction then we are back to the old discussion of which one is the most important, the first Legend Of Zelda or Hydlide (which obviously inspired Zelda's Hyrule world). However we can't deny that the game that was actually influential to the overall industry was The Ledend Of Zelda simply because it was the one that promised more sales as it was the one that actually became popular and recognize by a wider audience, and therefore the one relevant to immitate. Also it is important to mention that "essential" is a very subjective word. I did mention some of the most influential games, but there are also those games that are video game culture relevant like Mortal Kombat II, Killer Instinct, KOF '98, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Tekken 3, SoulCalibur II, in the fighting scene, or Truxton, and M.U.S.H.A. in Japan for shmups, also games like Metal Slug, Angry Birds, Pokémon Go, Modern Warfare, Destiny, etc.. You can't rule out games of that magnitude to the gaming culture, as people can recognize them as very important titles in the industry.

Also it is important to mention that "essential" is a very subjective word. Ayuh, but discussions on objective facts are less interesting than opinions. Speaking of which, I gave some thought to the Pokemon one and decided you were right. I think Yellow is probably the one that should be played. It's got the mascot of the series right there, you get all of the original starters through the game, but everything is a little more polished than the first two. All Pokemon games are very similar (played one, you've played them all, to an extent) but if there's one title that should be played, it's probably Yellow.

I feel like we need a Fallout game and Skyrim on the list - two games I haven't played and always feel left out when the conversation goes to those series.

I feel a lot of games that were massive should be there, the Castlevania NES Trilogy, Super Mario World, the Donkey Kong Country SNES Trilogy, the Ninja Gaiden NES Trilogy, the NES Double Dragon Trilogy, Contra III, all shmups by Treasure, the Genesis Sonic The Hedgehog Trilogy, the Golden Axe Genesis Trilogy, the Streets Of Rage Genesis Trilogy, the Final Fight Trilogy, almost everything by Quintet, you know like ActRaiser, Soul Blazer, Robotrek, Terranigma, Illusion Of Gaia, all 6 NES Mega Man games, the SNES Mega Man X Trilogy, Secret Of Mana, Final Fantasy VI, Super C, Life Force, Kid Icarus, Bionic Commando, the NES TMNT Trilogy, the first 6 Metal Slug games, if not at least 1 to 3, Rush'n Attack, Thexder, Blaster Master, Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, those kind of games. Say what you want, but all those games were and still are essential.

stratogustav No doubt that all of those games you just listed are fantastic, but I don't think they're "essential." Not in the same way that I originally meant. Think of the essentials as being like the beginner level. So, you mentioned one of my favorite games ever, Mega Man X. Everyone should play through at least one Mega Man game at some point, just to understand what it's all about. But if someone told me that they'd never played any MM game before and I could only recommend one of them, I'd probably agree with Cervantes and give that person Mega Man 2 over the X games. Not because 2 is better than X, but because that way, the person will be most familiar with what makes classic Mega Man what it is. The X and 3 and whathaveyous then follow as icing on the cake, so to speak.

That said, all the other games I mentioned in my last post are super amazing and important. To not experience those games is like a crime against humanity. How can someone not play Super Mario World, Contra III, Mega Man X, Turtles In Time, Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, QuackShot, or Castle Of Illusion? Those games are at the pinacle of gameplay design, and everyone deserves to play them. I have to say though, Mega Man 3 is the superior Mega Man game, 2 just came first. If Mega Man 2 is like a 10, Mega Man 3 is like a 10.5 or something like that. Mega Man 4 and 5 are 10s as well, and the music is like 100.
