I would rather just talk about Street Fighter 1. Every Street Fighter game is immensely different and unique from each other.
I have to say even though most Street Fighter games are quite balanced, none of them is as balanced as Street Fighter 1. The only issue with having that much balance is that you compromise on fighting personalities for each character and I guess that is the one thing Street Fighter 1 suffers from.
By the way, Street Fighter 1 is getting another release through the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection this year, and will be available on the Switch and all the other modern platforms.
Sadly it is one of the games in that collection that won't have an online mode to battle others online. It would had been a first, but it is understandable for Capcom to do that because of the nature of the game.
The first time I played the game was through one of those fake NES clones that people used to sell in the 90s that had many games already loaded inside. Street Fighter 1 was one of them. I don't even know if it ever had an arcade release.

I gave it a 5 for Street Fighter II. One of my favorite games ever.

Almost nobody have played the first one, while everyone must play Street Fighter II. Then we should definitely have a Street Fighter II discussion. Put me in line I call it. Particularly about The World Warrior, games were never the same after that one came out.

Street Fighter Part I was pretty whack to be honest. Street Fighter Part II was the shit and the series has been pretty excellent ever since.

As a series I think it's bad.
The first game sucks as most will agree, nothing more needs to be said.
The second, despite being an okay fighting game when it came out, is wildly overrated and has been regurgitated to the point where it's impossible to care anymore, seeing a new version with some minor added content it got old well over two decades ago, just the 16-bit versions are far too many and reminds me of modern day DLC where at first one bare-boned version is released, then shortly thereafter another version is released with some DLC added on disc, then shortly thereafter a third version us released with some more DLC, etc. etc. etc., the Gran Turismo games of recent years for example have been especially guilty of this bullshit and I say games like Street Fighter II started this shit long before DLC replaced it.
Then the third Street Fighter game I've only tried briefly back in the day, but it felt just like the 2nd game to me and I never bothered trying it again, I've seen it a few times in youtube videos, usually when youtubers list games that nobody gives a shit about, and they just remind me of what a lackluster sequel it was and how the fighting genre had evolved far beyond what another generic Street Fighter game had to offer.
Finally the 4th and 5th don't do it for me at all, I can't even tell them apart, when I look them up I have to look at the file names of the images I see to tell which one I'm looking at, if the name doesn't reveal which one I have no idea as they are completely indistinguishable, I don't like their visual style and the visual technical quality is very low, they could've easily has both came out a generation earlier looking exactly the same, countless fighting games on PS2 alone prove that beyond a shadow of doubt and the fact that the weak old 3DS hardware that's far weaker than PS2 got at least a port of one of them (I think it was the 4th one) nails that coffin shut for good and buries it very deep.
On the flipside, the only games I've played and like in the series are the two EX 3D games on PlayStation. I've played both quite a lot and I own a copy of the second one. I think there's a next gen sequel on PS2 but I don't think I've ever played it, if I have I've forgotten about it at this point.
I had some version of Street Fighter II on PC back in the day and I have a version for Mega Drive these days. The one on PC was for MS-DOS and it had one of one of the bigger rosters, possibly it was a Super version, I don't remember exactly, but it had Cammy and Vega (the guy with the claw glove and face mask), the only two characters I played as as the rest never appealed to me, and the one on Mega Drive I think is called Hyper Dash or something (spelled with a "´" dash sign), it has a smaller roster than the MS-DOS version.
So, two good games and a potential third on PS2, that's not nearly enough for the series to be good when far too large a chunk of it is either pure garbage or wildly overrated.

I've only played Street Fighter 2 (which I bought off the PS3 store as Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix), and enjoyed it, even though the remake's art style was butt-ugly compared to the original game's. The first Street Fighter game is generally seen as laughably bad and everything I've heard about it has been negative, so there's no chance in hell I'm going to go out of my way to play it. Street Fighter 3 looks incredible (graphically) and seems to be the most hardcore game in the series; I'd love to give it a shot one day. Street Fighter 4 doesn't interest me since it didn't introduce many new characters or gameplay mechanics (unlike 3) and I've heard complaints that it's too slow for a competitive fighter. I've heard Street Fighter 5 is really mediocre.
Really though the only 2D fighting games that I've really connected with so far are the first 2 Smash games, especially Melee. Most fighting games just can't hold my interest for very long. I respect the genre but it's not one I find terribly fun to play.
I'm not giving the series a rating, since I've only played one game.

Well, I consider myself a Mortal Kombat fan for sure, specially of the first 4 games in the series. I'm definitely more a Mortal Kombat guy when it comes to fandom than I am of Street Fighter because the lore in Mortal Kombat is simply superior to my liking.
That said, I do recognize that when it comes to gameplay as a whole, Street Fighter is the clear winner between the two. Hence that's the whole reason why Street Fighter is 'til this day the most respected fighting franchise at a professional level worldwide. Heck I even recognize Killer Instinct has better gameplay than my beloved Mortal Kombat games.
I also do believe KOF is the king of fighters when it comes to gameplay, but even then I can't deny Street Fighter is at a status of its own that no other fighter will ever dream to reach, and I accept it because despite all the controversies, it comes down to, when you sit down, and compete, it makes you feel the real sport spirit behind it.
Don't get me wrong, I love all kinds of fighters, I love 3D fighters as well which are more accessible, and I even love arena fighters, but nothing beats having that one to one tension on a 2D field that Street Fighter provides.
But like I said before, each game is way too unique to group them together. Almost as if each game represented its own subgenre of 2D fighters, and that goes for all 5 mainline iterations of the series. Then the Alpha ones are part of the Marvel Vs. Capcom universe, there is also the underrated EX series, a platformer on the NES, and even your typical licensed game called The Movie.
Street Fighter is one of the richest most important influential and relevant series in the industry that no matter what our preferences are, if we are grounded in reality, it is something we simply can't deny.

Oh yeah, Street Fighter The Movie was okay too, I'd forgotten about that one, good movie, okay game for what it's worth, I got no complaints.
I will give Street Fighter 2 this though, I prefer it over Mortal Kombat.
Still, I love most other old fighting games like Eternal Champions, Cosmic Carnage, Virtua Fighter, Killer Instinct, Ballz 3D, Justice League Stealth Force (Mega Drive only, not the awful Super Nintendo game with the same name but developed by a completely different developer), Strip Fighter, Brutal and Primal Rage infinitely more than both Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

I always preferred Mortal Kombat. I agree with everything stratogustav said in his last post. I dig Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat, and like Armored Core Raven, Eternal Champions is still one of my all-time favorites, but Street Fighter II is where it's at gameplay-wise. The only games that rival it are from SNK.
