I really believe 1994 was the best year for video game releases. This has got to be the best release of Donkey Kong, and I love it to pieces. This game is excellent.

An outstanding achievement in Game Boy design. That hardware was more capable than anybody ever knew.
Also it's fun as heck.

Great pick. Glad I suggested it.
I would put the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong in my top five favorite games of all time. A brilliant throwback to the original arcade game, it modernized Mario's controls (eg he doesn't die from falling, can backflip, etc) and expands on the original gameplay by adding interesting puzzles. All of the stages add more abilities to Mario's repertoire and each time it's a joy to see what the game is going to throw at you next. It does a good job of balancing the puzzle elements with the platforming, so even though there are moments you have to stop to think, DK94 still always feels like the platformer that a Donkey Kong game should be. The game was heavily marketed with the Super Game Boy back in the day and I don't think any other game used that add-on to better effect. It looks equally great on the handheld as on the TV with a sweet arcade cab border.
The battery in my cartridge died a long time ago, but I still play through DK pretty regularly. Easy 5/5 from me.

I commented about this game for the Lord Karnage Vault, so I'll just go ahead and quote myself of what I said there: This game came to mind after playing Breath Of The Wild. I was trying to think of other games that are perfect in almost every aspect of the game design. Surprisingly many of the games that came to mind that always felt perfect to me were in the first black and white Game Boy, with games like Tetris, Mario Golf, Dr. Mario, and of course Donkey Kong, among many others. We definitely got some of the best games ever in that thing, like for example the Super Mario Land games, the Kirby Dream Curse games, Kid Icarus, the Zelda Oracle games, and for a lot of people the first Pokémon games as well. Sure there are other excellent games in the arcades like Ms. Pac-Man, the original Mario Bros. and many more that are perfect when it comes to game design. But Donkey Kong on the Game Boy is one of those games that when you play it the perfection blows right on your face. I stand by all that, the game is simply flawless.
